Mulky/Mangalore, Jul 27: It was feast to the eyes and appetite...literally!!

Aati (Aashada), which falls in the month of July and August enjoys a special place in the Tulu calendar. Farmers take a well-deserved rest after sowing seeds while heavy rains transform the earth into myriad shades of green. Meanwhile, the food items which are prepared during summer and specially preserved for this season are brought out from the storage room to delight the tastebuds.

Harmful insects take birth in this season owing to stagnant water. That is why man seeks divine help to control these insects. This has resulted in the birth of cultural rituals in Tulunadu.

But this culture has been vanishing slowly owing to the influence of western culture. Some of the Tulu organizations here are struggling to retain the richness of Tulunadu's culture. One such effort was at Mulky Narayan Guru Auditorium, by Yuvavahini on Sunday, July 27. The programme was successful in depicting the vibrant culture and heritage of Tulunadu.

U K Kumarnath, resident editor of Vijaya Karnataka, inaugurated the programme and graced the occasion. Well-known Tulu dramatist Devdas Kapikad was the chief guest. Speaking on the occasion, he opined that there is a need for the formation of a separate forum for the development of Tulu culture.

Dhanraj, producer of 'Koti Chennaya' movie, writer Harishchandra Salian, 'Yuvavahini' central committee president Raviraj Kumar, Big FM radio channel head Aravind N S, 'Yuvavahini' local unit president Narendra Kerekadu and Ramesh were present on the occasion.

The highlight, no doubt, was the traditional, mouth-watering Mangalorean cuisine that was served to the audience after the function. The spread of delectable delicacies not just stole the show but also proved to be an epicurian's dream come true!

Wow!! Mouth watering dishes..Aashada month is special for everybody in the coastal Karnataka. Mostely the farmers feel relaxed and take it easy after tiring work in the fields. I remember, when I was small, my gradfather and Grandmother who were growing the paddy in their fields and used to work in their own paddy fields and during this Ashada month they used to take much needed rest.

We used to get to eat, Mandas, Patholi, and all sorts of fried eatables made out of Jackfruits. My mom sent me few patholis made out of Jackfruit last week from Karkala through a friend. It was really nice article to ponder on the memories of yesterday.

I am sure today, these traditions are disappearing due to the modernization of our traditional farming and also due to disappearance of agricultural land in and around our districts. Good photograph and article..I enjoyed reading it.
