Mangaluru, Jan 26: Sahyadri Sanchaya staged 'Save Western Ghats' campaign in front of the office of Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner on Thursday January 25 in a unique manner.

Dinesh Holla, who planned this programme, was wearing black dress while the others wore masks and 'NOTA' badges to express anger against the government. The move of cutting down trees to build office of the deputy commissioner at Padil here, disregarding opposition of environmentalists was condemned. The harm done to the nature was replicated with the help of a fallen branch of a tree, and death of hatchings that have just come out of the eggs.

Addressing the gathering, Dinesh Holla said, "Due the destruction of trees in the Western Ghats we will definitely face drought in the coming days. Trees have been axed for the sake of constructing the DC's office. No one is bothered about preserving trees. No one wants to listen to the cries of trees. The Western Ghats is completely controlled by the drug mafia and minister Ramanath Rai has lost control over his department. When we urged him to deploy helicopters to control the forest fire recently, he made irresponsible statements."

Activist Suma said, "The district administration should have raised voice against axing of trees for DC's office, instead it has preferred to support it without showing any concern towards protecting the trees. They are only concerned about only concreting the roads in the city."

Activist Shasidhar Shetty said, "We had a lot of expections from Ramanath Rai as he is a minister from our district. We thought he would protect the environment which is being affected by industrialization. Instead, he is supporting the mafia and becoming the reason behind the destruction of nature. A sincere officer who stood against sand mafia has been transferred. The present DC is doing a tremendous job but he too may get transferred on the pretext of some irrelevant reason."

Former Karnataka Sahitya Parishat president, Harikrishna Punaroor, leaders of the organization like Harish Adyar, Dinesh Kodialbail, Shashidhar Shetty, Yatish Salian, Dr Annayya Kulal and others took part in the programme.

Yes, Luv , M'lore. I totally agree that it is incumbent on all of us to grow trees around our homes. I have been saying all along that even if every one of us plants at least one sapling, that will compensate for the loss of trees. Or at least take care of the trees around your homes. But how many of us do that? We, selfish people, look around for trees to get shade for our vehicles but when the same tree needs some water, we never give a drop. When we see trees on the roads crying for help, we turn a blind eye. It pains to see gigantic trees being brought down to make place for buildings. By all means, construct buildings, but when one tree is felled, plant at least three in its place. Nobody is bothered about planting trees. It is happening everywhere and at this rate, I am afraid in a few years this place will turn into a desert. A stitch in time saves nine. Before more devastation takes place, act now. ACT NOW.
As far as Ramanath Rai is concerned, he has been a total let down, a total disappointment, the most unfit man to be the Forest Minister or the Minister in charge of this district. He should have put his foot down and stopped the total destruction of the forests when the Yettinahole project was going on in full swing. As the Forest Minister he failed to save the forests. As the District in charge Minister he failed to come to the rescue of his own district. What can anyone expect from this man? I have lost all hopes that this man will do something for the forests. I don't care if he wins or loses the elections, I just want him to be shunted out of the Forest Ministry. Let someone who is really interested and competent in preserving the forests be made the Minister. That said, let each one of us remind ourselves of what Kennedy said years back, Ask not what the country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country. Plant trees and save nature. Save the future generation. Think of the drought that will fall on us if we don't plant trees.

Where was the 'Sahyadri Sanchaya' then Javadekar Environment Ministry allows culling of wild animals?
"The Environment Minister is writing to every state to kill whichever animal people want. In Bengal he gave permission to kill elephants, in Himachal he gave permission to kill monkeys, in Goa it were the peacocks. The Chandrapur massacre involves killing of 53 wild boars and the permission for killing 50 more has been granted. His own wildlife department has said that they don't want to kill. I don't know what is with the brutal killing of so many animals".
Is Sahyadri range is going to survive so much of onslaught without wild animals which is the part of the nature?
The Western Ghats a global UNESCO World Heritage Site is a priceless treasure that, once destroyed, can never be recreated by human hand. In a urgent appeal to the Government Of India, Conservation India had appealed to Central Government to help safeguard the Western Ghats.
Is among Sahyadri Sanchaya signed for petition before taking 'NOTA' and blaming Rai?
S.R.Hiremath, president of the Samaj Parivartana Samudaya (SPS), Karnataka, has been at the forefront of the struggle against environmental degradation. On his petition, the Supreme Court banned mining in Bellary. As one travels from Bellary towards Hospet and Sandur, one can spot huge craters and narrow truck paths winding down to the abyss. Bellary Reddy's have entirely destroyed ecosystem of western Ghats.
Sanchaya concerns are genuine with Western Ghats losing 35% of forest in 90 years. But using childrens hanging 'NOTA' around their neck who are not even eligible for voting rights is condemnable.
The concern should be written addressing to Centers Environmentals minister CC to PMO and Worldwide conservation society.
By hanging 'NOTA' as the election to the state is nearing looks more political.
