As many as 1,04,671 new voters have been added in 2018. During 2013 Assembly elections, the total voters were 8,73, 832, among whom 4,13, 094 were men and 4,60,738 were women.

Speaking to the reporters, ADC Anuradha G said, "As many as 1,450 ballot machines and 1,620 control units have been brought from Surendranagar of Gujarat for the upcoming elections. On February 26, we received electronic voting machines (EVMs). BEL Company from Bengaluru provided a total of 50 ballot units for Shivamogga and 50 units for Udupi district.

"All 1,680 voter verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) units have been already kept in the security lounge. A team of experts will examine the technical procedure of the first level checking of EVMs," she said.

There will be 1,078 polling booths in all. The number of polling booths will be as follows:

Udupi - 243
Byndoor - 215
Kundapur - 213
Kaup - 203
Karkala - 204.

"The VVPAT machine was used during Mysuru by-election. The election commission will conduct trial and error procedure before election. It is an independent verification printer machine and is attached to electronic voting machines. It allows voters to verify if their vote has gone to the intended candidate. When a voter presses a button in the EVM, a paper slip is printed through the VVPAT. The slip contains the poll symbol and name of the candidate. It allows the voter to verify his/her choice. As a result of this, it takes one hour more to counting votes. The CCTVs will be installed in every booth and everything will be recorded in the polling booth. The ZP CEO and the election commissioner will monitor the venue of polling," Anuradha said.

CEO of Udupi zilla panchayat Shivanand Kapashi said, “The awareness about casting vote through VVPAT will be conducted shortly. The awareness campaign will be held by Yakshagana, street play and organizing workshops. Those who did not add their names to voter list can submit application for it. A Booth level committee will be formed and a BLO will be appointed for each committee. Asha workers and village accountants are the members of booth level committee.”

"There will be required facilities at the polling booths for physically challenged, visually challenged and hearing impaired voters. Around 8,000 different types of physically challenged were reported while surveying," he added.

The election commission has uploaded all information regarding the Assembly election in the website http://udupi.nic.in/election-2018/index.html
