B’lore: Fr Lawrence D'Souza to Take over as Director of St John's Hospital on Sep 1

Bangalore, Aug 27: St John's Academy of Health Sciences Bangalore (SJNAHS), a premier institution dedicated to health and health related services respected across India, comprises of a 1,200-bed hospital with all medical and surgical departments including super-speciality departments, a college of nursing, a research institute, located in a sprawling 132-acre plot in the city, was established in 1963 by the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI).
Eminent personalities had been at the helm of this great institution and led it to dizzy heights over the years. Now, Fr Lawrence D'Souza has been appointed as the new director of St John's National Academy of Health Sciences with effect from September 1, 2008.
Fr Lawrence (59), born on November 28, 1948 at Pernal in Udupi district, was ordained as priest on May 5, 1977 at Milagres church, Mangalore. He completed his B Sc degree from St Alopysius College, post graduation in philosophy from Karnataka University Dharwad and PG Diploma in business management from St Aloysius College. He also holds a LLB degree which he completed through SDM Law College. He also completed his M A in religious studies and Ph D in administration and supervision from Fordham University, New York.
Fr Lawrence is fondly and gratefully remembered by the people of Dakshina Kannada district for his services as the secretary of Catholic Board of Education for seven years and also as administrator of Father Muller Medical College Hospital and College of Nursing for eight years. He served as an associate pastor of Our Lady of Mercy Church New York and Sacred Heart church, New York between 1992 and 1998. He also served as parish priest of Holy Cross church Cordel Mangalore Diocese for two years. He is set to take over as the director of St John's Academy of Health Sciences on September 1 this year, after functioning as its director designated since March 1 this year.
In Fr Lawrence, the institution will be having a caring and experienced director, who is sure to help the institution to live up to its motto, 'He shall live because of me'. His has been a success story in all his previous assignments because of his dynamism, leadership qualities, hard work, keen desire to learn and care for the suffering.
