PM Modi bends down to help tribal woman wear slippers at Chhattisgarh rally

Bijapur (Chhattisgarh), Apr 14 (Deccan Chronicle): The huge crowd that had congregated at Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s event was taken by surprise when Modi, who was slated to present a pair of slippers to a tribal woman, bent down and helped the bare-footed woman wear her gifted footwear. The symbolic gesture was welcomed by a loud applause.

Like everyone else, Union Health Minister JP Nadda, who was standing next to the Prime Minister when he decided to make it a memorable moment for the woman, was also taken aback.

The BJP later tweeted the video with a message: "PM Narendra Modi shows yet again why he is a 'Pradhan Sevak' in the true sense!"

In another tweet, the BJP said: "One more way in which women are respected".

The lady was one of the thousands of women covered under the scheme launched more than a decade earlier to provide slippers to people engaged in collecting Tendu leaves in Chhattisgarh.

Under the scheme operated by the state's minor forest produce corporation, one person in each family of Tendu leaves collector is eligible for a pair of slippers. A family is eligible for a pair, according to the federation's website, only if they pluck at least 500 bundles in a year.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had flown to the town on Saturday and spent several hours in Chhattisgarh, listening to young girls who talked about a wide array of issues.

Narendra Modi, who is the first prime minister to visit the tribal district of Bijapur, also launched a health insurance scheme.

The PM inaugurated a new rail line and a passenger train between Gudum and Bhanupratapur, bringing north Bastar region on railways' map.

It was the Prime Minister's fourth visit to Chhattisgarh, where assembly elections are due later in the year.

Stop this drama modi. Your time is numbered. Look at what UN chief saying about katua rape case? Whole world is condemning what is going around you. Instead of wearing chappal to one single lady is not enough. Punish the culprits and establish law and order in the country.

The Raman Singh government is certainly behaving in a dictatorial manner. Here are five reasons why:
    1. Attack on media
    2. Attack on activists
Tribal rights activist, Soni Sori, who was recently attacked with an acid-like chemical in Chhattisgarh
    3. Targeting of political rivals
Fingers were also raised over the role of the state government in the ghastly Naxal attack of 2013 in Jhiram Ghati that had killed several Congress leaders, including then state president Nand Kumar Patel and former Union minister VC Shukla.
    4. Harassment of tribal people
According to reports, a tribal woman, Meena Khalko, was done to death in 2011 in a police encounter with the cops wrongly dubbing her a Maoist. She was allegedly gangraped by the police and killed. Fifteen women in Bijapur district lodged complaints of gang rape and police atrocities.
    5. Fake surrenders and encounters
The Chhattisgarh police have earned the reputation of being notorious for passing off innocents as Maoists and staging their surrender for winning cheap publicity. Out of 70 tribal people who had surrendered in Sukma district in December 2015, just 10 were Maoists, as per the police records. The remaining 60 men and women were allegedly paid Rs 10,000 each to "surrender".

Chhattisgarh tribal women suffer in silence raped, assaulted and no one speaks for them. For tribal women living in the Bastar region of central India, sexual abuse at the hands of security forces has become routine. The state government has now been challenged to take responsibility.Adivasis lands are forcefully transferred to the industrialist.According to the Panchayats Act, 1996, in areas like Raigarh where more than 50% population is tribal, land owned by Adivasis cannot be transferred to non-Adivasis.
The National Human Rights Commission found 16 women victims of rape, sexual and physical assault by police personnel in Chhattisgarh, recommended compensation of 37 lakhs.
But Modiji satisfy them with pair of 'Chappal'.
