Lucknow: St Mother Teresa School for specially-abled children inaugurated at Kareilly

Lucknow, May 2: The Catholic diocese of Bareilly, took on the initiative of launching St Mother Teresa School for visually and hearing impaired on Monday April 30 at Kareilly.

After inaugurating the school, Dr Ignatius D’Souza, bishop of Bareilly said, "There are a number of specially-abled children in Bareilly city and its surrounding villages who need our support and care. They need the basic necessities of life and we are happy to provide them education so that they can have a decent living. We must realize that it may take longer for them to learn necessary abilities to function independently as an adult in society. However, with love, patience, early intervention and education, these children can be integrated into society and lead happy productive lives." The bishop thanked generous donors from Germany, Dubai, Abu-Dhabi, Doha-Qatar and Bareilly for their financial assistance.

Principals, managers, teachers and students from Bishop Conrad School, Child Care, St Maria Goretti, St Francis and other prominent schools of the city gathered at the venue. A number of cultural items were presented by the students of Navjyoti School for the visually impaired from Lucknow and St Maria Goretti Inter College for the dignitaries. The dance drama on the 'Life of Mother Teresa' was much appreciated by the audience.

The function concluded with the felicitation of guests and presentation of a memento to the guests from Germany and other well-wishers. On the occasion, ‘Plant One Sapling’ campaign was launched at the school campus. Speaking here, the guest of honour Andreas Scharf urged the students to go for meaningful birthday celebrations by planting a sapling every year and taking care to protect them.

St Mother Teresa School for the Visually and Hearing Impaired belongs to the Education Society of Catholic Diocese of Bareilly, which runs reputed schools, homes for leprosy patients and other charitable institutions in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The school seeks to serve 150 specially abled children. It will impart integrated learning for these children. Catholic nuns from Lucknow who are specialized in educating the visually and hearing impaired, along with a group of teachers will run the school.
