Varanasi: Sons preserve dead mother's body for 4 months to receive pension

Varanasi, May 23 (PTI): The body of a 70-year-old woman was kept hidden by her sons in their house in Varanasi for over four months so that they could continue to withdraw her pension using her thumb impression, the police said.

The body of Amravati Devi was recovered from the store room of her residence in Kabirnagar colony of the Bhelupur area after the neighbours informed the cops about a foul smell emanating from the house, they said.

Devi died on January 13 and her five sons, Ravi Prakash, Dev Prakash, Yogeshwar Prakash, Jyoti Prakash and Girish Prakash, were using various chemicals to preserve her body, they added.

The police also found ink marks on one of Devi's thumbs.

Devi used to receive a sum of Rs 40,000 as pension after her husband Daya Prasad, who worked as a superintendent in the customs department, died a few years ago.

The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination.

No arrests have been made so far and investigation is underway.

It's a crime by greedy and inhuman sons. Giving it a political colour isn't at all required. But, these sons need some "tatva" classes.

Nothing - only mother's body kept without cremation for 40000 pension per month. Anything is possible in UP. And some people from that lawless place come here to our state to preach.

That is, when, in our nation, mothers pride in having a male child or a Daughter-in-law is thrown out of the house for delivering a girl baby (not giving a continuation to the family).

Good for nothing sons who want to eat out of the corpse's earnings ! What happened to the peace the parents get when the sons discharge their 'Pinda' in holy waters ???
