Udupi: Going Beyond Kallianpur on National Highway? Brace up for Roller-Coaster Ride

Udupi, Sep 13: A trip on the National Highway stretch between Kallianpur-Santhekatte near here to Sastan is sure to send your blood pressure soaring, bones totally shaken and send your senses for a toss. This part of the road can compete for being recognized as the 'Road of Shame', like the 'Hall of Fame'.

The most harried road users here are the pedestrians and two-wheeler riders. The two-wheelers jump in and out of pot holes and craters like spring board divers, leaving the riders worried about the prospects of some parts of the vehicle or spectacles falling off or the vehicle tyres getting burst. If they are not careful, express buses and trucks might just graze past them, anointing both the vehicles and their riders with thick muck, free of cost.

The pedestrians have a more severe problem on hand. The roadside margin, on which they used to walk, has become a favourite ground for the vehicles to tread, as the roads are dotted with huge craters. Jumping vehicles go out of control of drivers, terrorizing the pedestrians of crushing them under their wheels. The pedestrians too must necessarily carry an additional pair of dresses in a plastic cover, if they are to look respectable at their destinations.

The bus passengers have a jumpy ride and a chance to sit in the bus much longer, for the same fare. Be careful if you already suffer from dizziness, as the travel will leave you dazed! Twist of spinal chord, sprain in the lower back, heads hitting the side windows and nasty sound of the buses that jump in and out of craters like the cross country bike races you see, damaging your ears, leaving you thrilled, if you are left with the strength to enjoy it. You can be rest assured that you will be tossed around like a doll unless you determinedly cling on to rods inside the buses with both hands. Those of you, who have never travelled on a boat or ship in the sea, will surely enjoy travelling on bus on this stretch. Even the most turbulent waves in the sea may never toss the ship in the manner, buses get tossed out and in of these potholes which are larger than open wells and a little smaller than lakes.

The heavy vehicles that move erratically from side-to-side, in search of safe patches and avoiding potholes pose extreme danger for both the road users and passengers. The drivers struggle to stick to their seats and it need not come as a surprise if they are unable to see the pedestrians walking by the side of the road. A person who uses this road is sure to come across several vehicles that are stranded by the roadside, after developing multifarious problems.

Whenever the rain abstains and dry climate returns, the road gets covered by red dust, impairing visibility hugely. The vehicles get covered by so much dust and muddy water that they become unrecognizable once they cross this stretch. If you have cold, cough or problems relating to lungs, better avoid this road. If you take this road, your problems might almost surely get aggravated.

This has proved that nothing absolutely nothing can move our political leaders. This has been going on for almost a decade now and there seems to be no respite from this in the foreseeable future. Only blame games will continue. Lives are not precious for them

It is really pathetic situation which is never seen before in the history of Udupi District. Yes there are people who comment about what the current CM can do in 100 days and keep blaming the Government in the Centre for all the ills.

Mr. Rakesh you grow up to the real task at hand and think of your own local leaders and elected representatives not only the CM. For the first time in the history of the twin districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada we have two powerful ministers.

Our very own Dr.VS Acharya, Home Minister (look at the law and order situation) who is representing the people of Udupi for the last several years in one way or other and Ms Manorama Madhwaraj a seasoned politician and ex-minister now an MP belongs to BJP.

Do you think these people are worried about the general public? They are only worried about their votes and their khazanas. What the elected leaders such as Raghupathy Bhat and Srinivas Shetty are doing? Are they aware of these roads or not or are they only take the aerial route to Bangalore by helicopter? If they come to you for asking for votes next time with folded hands use the charcoal mixed with chilly powder to brandish them to show their real brand of leadership – corruption and dadagiri.

Remember to vote or support the good leaders who could perform and do things to benefit people’s causes not because of their financial and muscle strength alone. Wake up people of Udupi to the reality and not slogans.

Thanks to Kevin Rodrigues for sending the pictures about the pathetic conditions of the roads connectin Kallianpur, Brahmavar, Sastan and Kundapur. It is high time the MLA of Brahmavar thinks of his consituency and try to use their time for the welfare measures of their consituency. The NH17 or the National Highway posses a thrat for the daily commuters ,pedestrians and the vehicle users. The innumerable potholes is like a death trap inviting someone to meet his grave. Will the concerned authorities look into this matter promptly? Or are you waiting for a major mishap to happen?Every now and then we come across accidents occuring on the national highway but nobody seems to take prompt action and repair the roads. Is it only when the elections are round the corner that you people wake up and rest of the time leave the innocent voters to fend for themselves?

Also to people who blame the present chief minister for the conditions of the roads do you mean to say that the condition happened after the New Govt came to power ?. Was these roads a straightway to haven all these years ?. Come on grow up, give them a chance. Just have a look at Kalsanka road in Udupi, No one would have imagined it would have been improved to this extent. One by one roads are improving. It also takes time and proper planning to close highways or main roads to find alternatives. besides most of oour state highways are in good conditions. NH-17(as name suggests) National Highways are being maintained by the center authorites not the state, Thats the reason why roads leading to Surathkal,BC road are taking time to repair. Please stop blaming the State Govt for each and every issues from lack of rain to Floods.

It is really pathetic to see the raod condition on every rainy season since last three to four years. Why cant road authority give contrct to international contracter like L & T, Gamon India etc. So that they can build the road of international quality. In Japan we have rain al most evey 15 days. The road which last for at least 10 years and minimum load on the road is far higher than so called Manganese Ore truck. So balming rain and truck is non sense. I realy cut sorry figures specially pregnent lady who goes to office eveyday in this hell road eveyday. And young school going childrens. What is our DC, RTO and MP is doing altough they are ladies. I hate the system and corrupt people at top places.

I had the "great previledge " of travelling on this "living example " of our severely rotten corrupt system. We have to dig out the details of who constructed this painful road and make that contractor accountable for the most efficient road construction of the century. This contractor should open few schools to teach how to build worst highways in our most educated district which throws temper tantrums whenever there is a romour about any develpomental processes god only help our people who want to regress in every fields of life

How does the Chief Minister come in to the picture? The road is Natioanl Highway. What our MPs are doing? The best solution is to dig a trenches and cut the road so that the entire traffic from Kerala to Maharashtra is halted. For a while our District people may have to use inner routes. Then see why the Road will not be repaired?

They give the reason of heavy rain and overloaded trucks for this condition of roads. Loaded trucks are part of our economy. There is no rail track and road mode of transport is only alternative. Several European countries has more rain almost whole year. They have trucks plying with more load from UK, Germany to Turcky and even Eastern Europe.

Only difference is, roads are lasting for several decades. They have better contractors or may be better government officials to maintain the standard of road construction. Here government is fully busy with communal and religeous activities to gain/ retain power. We have good engineers from DK Engineering colleges. We have officers from north area and they probably do not understand the soil of DK. They understand only kick backs! For a place like DK which generates large amount of revenue and foreign exchange, land of intellectuals deserve better roads than what we see in the above pictures.

No offense to anybody but the 'babus' in their white clothes! Bring the babus and make them stand by the deplorable roads and let the vehicles splash the muddy water on them. They will either resign from their posts in shame, giving others a chance or repair the roads.

Dont disturb the chief minister by showing this condition of the roads. He is still praying. Let him finish the prayer, by that time this road will not exist and may be he will build a temple or matt or masjid on that spot. Be prepared to attend the opening ceremony ............

The private buses and public transport should go off the roads until the repairs or a new road is done. This is the only way the local MP's, MLA's will wake up to do their job.
