Congress likens Modi to Aurangzeb, says there's undeclared Emergency

New Delhi, Jun 26 (IANS): Comparing Prime Minister Narendra Modi with "dictator" Aurangzeb, the Congress on Tuesday said there is an "undeclared Emergency" in the country for the past 49 months and democracy has been held hostage by his party BJP.

Describing the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) as a "Bahut Jhoothi Party" (a party based on lies) and Modi a "liar Prime Minister", the Congress said owing to its arrogance, in 2019 the BJP would meet the same fate as it had in 1984 when it was reduced to two seats.

Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala told reporters: "Dictator Emperor Narendra Modi, who is more cruel than Delhi sultanate's Aurangzeb, today (Tuesday) gave the country lessons in Emergency, which took place 43 years back."

"He forgot to say that Aurangzeb had imprisoned only his father, but in the past 49 months of undeclared Emergency, today's Aurangzeb Modiji, along with his party BJP, has held the very democracy a hostage," said Surjewala.

Prime Minister Modi said on Tuesday that the period of the 1975-77 Emergency was a "dark period" that the nation could never forget and called for making democracy stronger by "writing, debating, deliberating and questioning" its vital aspects and reiterated his commitment to protecting the Indian Constitution and democracy.

Surjewala said: "For the last 49 months, PM Modi's numerous promises have turned out to be lies. Black money hasn't returned yet and democracy is being crushed under the Modi government."

He said that an atmosphere of fear is being created to suppress dissent.

"There is an undeclared Emergency in this country for the last 49 months, and the opposition is being suppressed. Modiji himself follows those people who give death and rape threats to anyone who oppose them, including BJP's minister Sushma Swaraj," said Surjewala.

"The Finance Ministry is actively working to disrupt the thriving Indian economy instead of improving it. The Prime Minister is himself threatening the states to fall in line or else there would be cuts in the grants released to them," he added.

"PM Modi is distracting people to hide his failures. He is trying to divert attention of the country by talking about 43-year-old Emergency."

Hitting out at the BJP, the Congress leader said: "Forty-three years ago, Janata Party (JP) was pro-rich and pro-zamindars, while Congress party fought to give access of banks to the marginalised. Even today the BJP favours only a handful of rich."

Emperor Aurangzeb is being portrayed as an orthodox and intolerant ruler of India by many Hindu writers, which is factually incorrect.

A number of non-Muslims, including Hindus, Sikhs, Marathas and Jats, were employed by him in his court. Aurangzeb did not compromise on the fundamentals of Islam, which are in fact the moving spirit of every faith.

He tried during his lifetime to put down rebellions all over his empire (the Marathas, the Sikhs, the Satnamis and the Rajputs) and some of them conspired for the overthrow of Mughal empire, not to mention the foreign powers that were already bribing rajas and maharajas: the British stretching their legs in Calcutta, the Portuguese in Goa and the French testing waters in the South.

Historian Shri Sharma states that while Emperor Akbar had fourteen Hindu Mansabdars (high officials) in his court, Aurangzeb actually had 148 Hindu high officials in his court (ref: Mughal Government). But this fact is somewhat less known and publicized for prejudiced his reputation.

Many Hindus wrongly and mendaciously accuse Aurangzeb of demolishing temples to make way for mosques but those are pure lies.

If he wanted, there would not have been a single temple standing erect in India.

On the contrary, Aurangzeb donated huge estates for use as Temple sites and support thereof in Benares, Kashmir and elsewhere. The official documentations for these land grants still exist. A stone inscription in the historic Balaji or Vishnu Temple, located north of Chitrakut Balaghat, still shows that it was commissioned by the Emperor himself. The proof of Aurangzeb's land grant for famous Hindu religious sites in Kasi, Varanasi can easily be verified from the deed records extant at those sites.Aurangzeb built more temples than he destroyed.Aurangzeb employed more Hindus including Shivaji.
The Congress comparison of blunder history with Modi is factually incorrect and self blunder.

The very fact that any tom ,dick and harry can criticise Modi and get away with it is proof that there is freedom of speech.
This Freedom of speech was taken away by indira gandhi during emergency.
Maybe Sikulars find it difficult to digest the truth.

Very true. A hollow chested PM with a 57" chest now is on a blame game spree. Emergency has been judged by the people of India in 1977 and Mrs Indira Gandhi was pardoned and brought back to power in 1979-1980. Mr Modi is taking shelter by suppressing the voice of dissent and calling it governance and development. In the BJP there appears to be grave yard silence and no MP or MLA dares speak against Mr Modi or Amit Shah even though they commit monumental blunders. 2019 elections will give the verdict on Modi's performance.
