New Delhi: Mangalorean Woman who Trapped Men on Net held for Murder

Mangalorean Woman who Trapped Men on Net held for Murder

TNN

New Delhi, Sep 26: She is a graduate with a call centre accent, has worked for a while in a BPO and, by her own admission, never failed an interview in her life. In short, there is nothing about her profile that would give away her recent profession - setting up honey-traps for men in internet chatrooms and then robbing her victims.

On Wednesday, 27-year-old Eva Gonsalvez and her 30-year-old friend, Eric Anthony William Massey, were arrested by the south west district police for allegedly murdering a 62-year-old retired Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) general manager, Mahesh Kumar Goel.

The arrests came close to two months after Goel's semi-decomposed body was discovered inside his blue Maruti Zen on July 18 at Dwarka Sector 12. Goel, a resident of Mayur Vihar, had been dead for two days.

Police said Eva's interrogation has revealed how she would strike friendships with rich men on the net, making full use of her call centre-acquired communication skills. Within a day of starting the conversation - the speed was to ensure that she didn't reveal too much about herself beyond her mobile number - Eva would call the victim over at a mall or a hotel to know "each other better". Eric would lurk close by and when the potential victim would arrive, the duo would drug him and rob him of cash, valuables and credit cards.

According to DCP (southwest) Shalini Singh, Goel's death was "unintentional, a deed that Eva is still not ready to believe she committed."

The Mangalore girl who stayed for a while in Ahmedabad, had set up a date with Goel at the Metropolitan Mall in Gurgaon on the evening of July 15.

Goel met her in his car and after some conversation, was offered pastries laced with sleeping pills - the colourless, odourless kinds which domestic helps have often used to drug their employers. "Goel became unconscious and Eric started driving towards the Gurgaon Expressway toll plaza, the plan being that they would rob him and then leave him in the car in a secluded place," Singh said.

But the traffic was heavy and they were afraid that dumping the car on the road would raise suspicion. So Eric started driving towards the Sector 4 market in Dwarka. Goel, meanwhile, regained consciousness and put up a fight. Sensing trouble, Eric repeatedly punched him on his chest and face. Goel collapsed and the duo fled with his belongings.

Two days later, Goel's body was discovered. The postmortem report is yet to be handed over to the police, but it's suspected that the 62-year-old was smothered with a pillow found on the rear seat of the car.

Police zeroed in on the couple after it was found that Goel's credit card was used at least four times at four different departmental, jewellery and electronic stores in Madangir and Kalkaji.

"Shopkeepers told us about a 20-something woman and a man who used to come in a rickshaw, leading us to believe that the duo stayed somewhere close by. We got sketches made and finally arrested them from a cyber cafe. The honeytraps were on in full swing even after the murder, in fact that's what they were doing when they were caught," said a senior police officer.

Eva had struck up a friendship with Eric - who has a wife and a child - in Ahmedabad but it was only in Delhi that they became really close, said a police officer. "Eva has diabetes and in April this year she quit and returned to Ahmedabad because she was too weak to carry on. Eric pleaded with her to come back, found her an accommodation and since then they have robbed countless men like this," he added.

Three laptops, eight mobiles, eight debit and credit cards, one expensive watch, stereo heads, eight SIM cards and 20 sleeping pills were recovered. Using Goel's card, they had bought a fridge, a colour TV, two room coolers and other electronic items, all of which has been confiscated.

This is wrong. I feel the police should not cover the faces of culprits. Whenever the police or CBI arrests the criminals why they have to cover their face. Let the public see their glories face and recognize them, they may be our own neighbors ! so..

'Burkha' or headcarf made to protect themselves from indecency but here it has been miss-used to kill. This shows how we miss-use what is made to use for the better. This couple, not only put in jail for life, but also make them pay to the deceased family by collecting all their assets, if there is any.

Yeah, this is an embarrassing issue for Mangaloreans especially for Catholics. Anyway this particular case should not spoil the name of Mangaloreans who are highly respected everywhere for their hard work, honesty and sincerity. One thing we should remember that this type of duping, looting, murdering, etc. are happening everywhere in India and Mangalore should not be an exception. The culprits have done a serious crime and they should not go unpunished.

Thank God they are caught now, otherwise how many of those guys would have fallen victim to this charming girl. I don’t think this is the first time Mangalore became “famous” for a shameful crime like this. Do you guys know how many Mangaloreans are working as underworld dons or their goons in Bombay, Dubai, etc. involving in heinous crimes such as extortion, kidnapping, blackmailing, killing, etc.?

You ask Dawood Ibrahim or his associates and they will give a long list of Mangaloreans working for them. Having said this, let me emphasize that Mangalore is more famous for good things than evil ones.

Mangaloreans are smart of course, but we some time forget or rather the smartness kicks out the fact that "truth will come out at the end" Each individual is gifted with some quality, in one way or the other some use it at the maximum potential and some are not! Poor thing here is people tend to mess up things with bad politics and politician, community and religion so on with any thing what they find. in fact, that’s a bit embarrassing! Cheers from the island

Religion is not a biological identity like, DNA or blood groups, for humans. Unlike DNA which delivers ‘genetic instructions’, or acts like a blue print, mere classification of individual under a particular faith/religion, do not absolve the person in committing good or bad acts.

There are good and bad lots in every man made groups. Religion must be a flowing river, which should imbibe contemporary essentials, thereby transforming in to ‘a way of life’. Any faith that tries to derive its strength only from few lines of inscription of ages old script, do not fulfill spiritual instinct or address materialistic aspect of society, which is very much imperative today. Coming days, human race may be inclined to embrace one and only one faith- “Humanism”. Vasudeva kutumbakkam (Treat the whole world as your family)? An ancient adage of India.

One and only theft or any kind of offence would not be divulged for ever. But one who does it, is encouraged to do so for the second time and perhaps would avade that time too. Well, he is encouraged to do it for the third time and would be caught.

Dear Friends and fellow citizens, Eva and Eric are not just the start and end of such thieves. Its a very common scenario everywhere. Political parties and being a Manglorean need not be highlighted here. Couples creating scenarios and trapping wealthy men has even been picturised in our Indian Cinema with a very popular movie, "Bunty Aur Babbli". Hope you'll still remember. Then why do you'll, my fellow country-men create so immature comments.

Eva and Eric were culprits of just stealing but Mr. Goel's short term unconsciousness made them undertake the un-intentional murder. Its we people who should be aware of such conspiracies and do not give way to strangers calling you and making you preys in thier well-planned traps. So lets create an awareness among ourselves and stop blaming the others. Lets us all Indians learn to stay in peace and harmony.
