After churches, minorities panel opposes NCW's call for ban on 'confessions'

New Delhi, Jul 29(Zee News): After Kerala Bishop’s body wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the recommendation by the National Commission for Women to ban confessions in churches, the National Commission for Minorities has strongly opposed the same.

According to the National Commission for Minorities, confessions in churches are an integral part of Christianity and cannot be interfered with. NCM chairperson Syed Ghayorul Hasan Rizvi told PTI, “The minority commission outrightly rejects the recommendation and is opposed to it.”

The assertions by the NCM came after the Kerala Catholic Bishops Conference on Friday severely criticised the proposal of the NCW and appealed Prime Minister Modi to reject the same.

In their letter to the PM, the priests suspected a 'hidden agenda' by NCW chief Rekha Sharma and asked her to withdraw her statement.

“We have written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting him to reject the panel’s recommendations. This is the question of the existence of the minorities. On what basis has the panel made such a suggestion? What is its motive behind such an act?” Father Varghese Vallikkatt, the spokesperson for the Kerala Catholic Bishops Conference, said.

NCW chief Rekha Sharma had recommended abolition of the practice of "confessions" in churches, saying that it can lead to blackmailing of women. Sharma also pressed for a central agency to investigate the incidents of rape and sexual assault in the churches of Kerala.

"The priests pressure women into telling their secrets and we have one such case in front of us, there must be many more such cases and what we have right now is just a tip of the iceberg," she said.

The recommendation by the NCW was made in the backdrop of a rape case against four priests of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church who were accused of sexually exploiting a married woman by using her confession made before a clergyman.

Reacting to it, Union Minister Alphons Kannanthanam also "outrightly rejected" the NCW's recommendation. A Kerala native and a Christian, Alphons insisted that the Modi government would never interfere in religious beliefs of people.

"It is not the official stand of the government. The Union Government has no connection with the stand taken by the NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma. It is a personal opinion of Rekha Sharma," Kannanthanam, Union Minister of State for Tourism, wrote in a Facebook post.

"The Narendra Modi government would never interfere in religious beliefs," he added.

Some claim why Middlemen? Right & wrong at the same time!
Who appointed Peter to carry out his mission?
People have a choice, either they follow a sacrament or they don't, why worry?
Just because in one Kerala Orthodox Church a few priests abused their power & committed a grave sin should we ban all our priests from a sacrament which has its own spiritual wellness?
Should all women go through mastectomy just because few women get breast cancer like Angelina Jolie did?
Should we ban all male doctors from attending female patients if we come across some doctors violated their professional ethics when treating women? Presence of female nurse is mandatory when treating women patients which prevents the above violation.
People in the past or present are going to confession to different churches or priests from other places which removes a very very slim chance of the above violation. Cutting your nose if you catch a cold is not the solution but right treatment is the option!

Confession is my spiritual belief, it is my faith. No one has forced me to receive it or no has forces me to follow. It is faithfull's personal choice. Better not to enter politics in my faith. I get relief, mental peace , spiritual happiness , when I pour my guilty feelings called sin in my religion through confession. Does our PM knows about my faith or any politician to enter in my belief and ban my sacrament called confession. Nooooo never. If you dont belief, no one will force you to follow. Don't bring your dirty poltics in my religion and spoil my faith.. If we look into other religions, every religious man whether it is in temple, mosque or church does all his evil role. Keep your faith strong and follow your religion. Please no entry to politics in my religion.

Similar to NCW stand on these(confession) kind of religious practices...., when there is potentially overwhelming good reasons /instances of exploitation.., I invoke Karnataka's most popular Ex CM Shriman Sidda RAM Aayyaji's proposal to bring in anti-superstition law......, and strongly draw the righting thinking Secular Hindustani's to make their point very clear before the union govt of the day under the leadership of Shri Modiji..., (I have full faith that our honorable PM has the right & unbiased wisdom to act and take decision on this matter, without any fear or favor)

We should help some of the above readers to get rid of the ‘midleman’’, encourage them to pursue their logic all the way: God can pour his life into us directly, we shouldn’t need a ‘middleman’ to baptize our children.

God knows millions of ways of feeding us (spiritually) without having to use a ‘iddleman’ to consecrate bread and wine and give First communion to our children. God is the ultimate healer, dont send for the ‘middleman’ to give last sacrament to the dying. And why have a ‘middleman’ to bless marriages? Can’t you pronounce yours vows directly in the presence of God? The only worry I have is our caterers and party organizers will go bankrupt and out Mangalorean Catholics will greatly opportunities to show off their power of riches and money. Oh by the way, get rid of that ‘The Middleman’ whom we Cale The Mediator, Jesus Christ, whom God the Father used as His middleman to reach out to us.

What do you mean by get rid of that Middleman or Mediator? Do you know God has empowered Him to rule God's Kingdom?

Lord Jesus Christ is indeed the Mediator between man and God. It is Jesus who made known God to man. It is He who gave us the identity of God.

If man knows God today it is through Jesus, who taught us about the love, mercy and will of God and the kind of life man must live in order to attain eternal life in His Kingdom. In short man would not have known God if Jesus had not introduced God to us.

I would like to clarify certain views expressed by some readers. Confession is nothing but a sort of spiritual counseling. Many people find solace in the human to human interaction with words that one hears during confession.

When we are asking pardon with God, we do believe but we cannot see that power in person. So if one finds solace after going through confession there is nothing wrong with it.

At the same time, those who find happiness by confessing their sins directly with God also may do so. It is an individual choice.

    Praise The Lord Amen.

I agree with you Bro. Who else can relieve us from pain except almighty and we don't need a third person between God and our soul, if we trust that it works...However, again I leave it to individual choice as I don't want to hurt individual faith/feeling and we are no one to do so...

Is any one among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed.” (James 5:14-17)
