Puttur, Aug 2: The vital link between Mangaluru and Bengaluru, Shiradi Ghat, was opened for heavy vehicular movement from the midnight of August 1.
Sasikanth Senthil, deputy commissioner (DC) of Dakshina Kannada district, has sent an order in this regard to concerned departments on Wednesday, August 1 itself. The barricades that were put up at Mani and Gundya were removed as per the information relayed by the police department.
Though the renovated Shiradi Ghat was opened for traffic on July 15, only light vehicles were allowed to use the road as the work of construction of retainer wall and levelling of edges of the road was pending.
Still filling of mud to the edge of the concrete road is pending on a stretch of three kilometres. Reflectors and sheets have been used in areas where the retainer wall has collapsed.
Several heavy vehicles had arrived till Gundya on the morning itself of Wednesday, August 1, in the hope that they will be allowed to use the Shiradi Ghat. However, the police did not allow them beyond Gundya as the official order from the district administration had not reached them.
"The remaining work on the Shiradi Ghat is completed. So the restriction that was placed on the movement of heavy vehicles is withdrawn. The Shiradi Ghat is open to all types of vehicles from Thursday, August 2," said, DC.
