Madikeri, Aug 27: Kodagu, which was battered due to the deluge and landslides, witnessed the first event to rejoice on Sunday, August 26. The whole relief camp got elated when the bride who lost her house and land, sat on the 'Hasemane' for her wedding.

Bride R Manjula, daughter of Baby, a resident of Makkandur married Rajesh, a resident of Kannur in Kerala with the help of Seva Bharati and Lions Club of Madikeri.

The marriage of Manjula and Rajesh was fixed last year itself. Both the families had decided to conduct the wedding at the VSSN Hall in Makkandur. However, due to the unforeseen deluge the house of Baby, mother of the bride, collapsed completely and the whole family is taking shelter in the camp for the victims of the deluge. The family was spending anxious moments due to this sudden twist of fate and were not sure whether they can go ahead with the marriage on August 26 as decided earlier. However, due to the humanitarian gesture shown by Seva Bharati and Madikeri Lions Club, the wedding rituals took place on the designated day itself in the Omkareshwara temple here.

The temple and the portico of the relief camp were decorated for the occasion. The family of the bridegroom Rajesh had come to Madikeri on the morning of Sunday. Both the bride and the groom were dressed in traditional attire at the camp itself. Around 10 am the wedding procession started from the relief camp and reached the temple at around 10.30 am on foot.

After some time Rajesh tied the 'Mangalsutra' around Manjula's neck in the background of 'Gattimela' and Vedic chants. Once the wedding was over the procession left back to the relief camp and people in the relief camp were served with lunch including the sweet desserts. Around 4 pm in the evening, the bride left with the groom's family to Kannur.
"I did not expect that my wedding will take place on the designated date as we had lost our house in the flood and landslide. Seva Bharati and Lions Club have given us all the support. I am feeling happy even under these trying circumstances," said Manjula, the bride of the occasion.
