Hyderabad, Sep 1 (Agencies): Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) is set to announce the dissolution of the state Assembly leading to early elections along with polls to four other states.
The state cabinet is to meet at 1 pm on Sunday, ahead of a massive public meeting at Ranga Reddy district.
September 2 marks the fourth anniversary of the formation of Telangana state, and the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) party is organising a mega event to showcase the achievements.
Some 2,000 acres of land has been identified for holding the meeting, which is said to be of an unprecedented scale, according to a report by NDTV.
While not officially confirming the decision to dissolve the Assembly, KT Rama Rao, the chief minister's son and the state’s municipal administration and IT minister, told NDTV that “important political announcements” can be expected on Sunday.
The term of the KCR government ends in May next year. According to schedule, the elections are to be held simultaneously with the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
Political observers have been speculating about KCR’s electoral strategy, with the chief minister being seen as tilting towards the BJP.
A week ago, the Telangana chief minister met BJP leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi, with reports suggesting that he may have pushed for early state elections to avoid a situation where the assembly is dissolved but the polls are delayed.
BJP chief Amit Shah is also believed to have told his party’s Telangana to be prepared for assembly elections at the end of this year.
