Mangaluru: Inebriated young girl creates ruckus on road

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Sep 3: Public got furious on a young girl, who was intoxicated and drove her two-wheeler in a zigzag and dangerous manner on the M G Road in the city on the night of Saturday, September 1.

The said girl drove her two-wheeler in a dangerous manner crisscrossing the road and overtaking a number of vehicles in the process in a precarious way. An auto rickshaw driver who saw the crazy act of this girl overtook her two-wheeler and instructed her to stop in between PVS and Navbharath area. The girl was taken to task by the public once she stopped the vehicle.

The girl who came to know the seriousness of the situation got frightened by the questioning by the public. When the locals tried to call the police she tendered an apology and requested them not to complain to the police. She also opened her bag and showed bundles of currency notes and asked the public as to how much money they want? This infuriated the public further.

Though the locals called the police, they did not turn up for a long time. By the time, the police arrived, the girl in question escaped with her two-wheeler.

Of late, bike-wheeling, joy rides and yelling of groups of young boys and girls has increased on the city roads during weekends. In some roads, these groups behave as if the road belongs to them. This kind of careless behaviour creates a nuisance to the public and may result in accidents also.

Very risky and dangerous to the passants, her self and public too.God knows when a accident happened.her life was in question, and opposit party. It was more risky as she showed her bag filled with money, and in drunken state ,any fellow could make use of her state and misuse her and throw in sea.Hope this girl reached home safely.why did not someone called her parents atleast for her safety?Instaed of driving so ?It would have been better parents than police first.(When they were in mangalore.)we hear so many times girls were waylaid and misused. At present we see so man young boys or girls indulging in hot drinks and get drunken.so sad.do parents show them a way?money makes it?or instead of taking time for kids, money ,drinks ,and food from Hotels?

Why so many speculations as why she was drunk?
Why do you have problems when a girl drinks ? No problem if a man drinks and falls on the gutter??
It is her right to drink. But driving after drinks is illegal.

Young Students from other parts of our own country and from abroad flock in our city to study. Since Mangalore is known for it's Higher Education Institutions and also I think it is value for money, parents prefer Mangalore for their children as Education center.
Staying in Hostels imposes restrictions regarding timings etc, so students stay in flats on rent or as PGs with an excuse of hostel food not being good. Here in these cases what these students do, where do they go with whom they go, about their drinking, smoking and other unwanted habits - no one to question and supervise. So they enjoy their lives and parents encourage it mostly coz they have enough money to give but they do not have enough time to spend with kids.

Most cases as Jennifer has written lack that genuine love from parents, so youngsters either take to drinking, smoking or friendship which shows them semblance of love. Thank God this girl was not hurt but went off home straight without any harm to herself n public too. At times police involvement should be there to create that fear factor in these youngsters, else they think they own the roads, they own restaurants and what not. When in Public their behavior needs to be monitored. Else things can go beyond imagination.

    Jenifer,

I have been reading your straight foward and un biased comments but first time you seem to have deviated from the ill of drunkered two wheeler riding, that too an educated college girl and sympathizing her for such an act.
I have heard that now Mangaluru is filled with students/PG's from foreign or from north India. I wish resposible people (parents or police) would guide her in a proper way.

    Flavian,

I will never defend her for drunk-driving but I explained the situation that drove her for drinking. Yes, she could have put her life as well as fellow-drivers/pedestrians life in danger. At the same time, had the police taken her in custody, that too may have made a big scene with her parents/guardians requirement to release her.

Good that she got away before the police arrived and that she reached her house safely. Or that she was not taken advantage by somebody in such state. Well, the surveillance will trace her without fail and she will certainly get a lesson or two very soon.

Dear Flavian, if students from outside have filled our dear Mangalore city then why not all born manglorians who have FLED economic hardships return back. Acche din is there to do a living with Chai and pakodos. The real fact is it is not students who have filled the city but people from within the state (!!!!!!!) who have filled to the brim our dear Mangalore. Uneducated and sensless people who have destroyed the core essence US.

When PG and rented accommodations in the city increase, this kind of irresponsible youth is natural. Our city is famous for higher education institutions. Young girls/boys stay away from their parents and when they get lonely, they do get into drinking, smoking or other bad habits. As city dwellers, we the public too are responsible for this because we are inviting maximum number of outsiders to stay in our apartments. Probably we too have been like them to some extent when we were young.

Lets not make it more difficult for them, lets be helpful and accommodating because their stay is our income too.

Lol. What makes you think Mangalorean girls and boys don't drink? They drink as much as every other youth, if not more. Probably the only fact that holds them back is the fear of going home and facing their parents and other family in an inebriated state. Your flawed argument has both a case of "cognitive dissonance" and "confirmation bias".

    Sunil,

Mangalore boys/girls have a HOME to go to, where parents question them but these youth don't. I have seen many parents let their children experience the drink at home, instead of, their children go slyly to pubs and taste it and the secret habit continues into an addiction.

Its better that we don't get judgmental in this case because parents raise their children as per their own wish. They explain them the draw-back of alcoholism when they give it to them for the first time. A child takes it with responsibility thus remains responsible. This does not apply to children staying away from parents and missing their care/guidance.
