Mangaluru: Mid-term holidays slashed for primary, high school students of DK, Udupi

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Sep 5: Deputy director of public instruction of Dakshina Kannada district has passed orders, duly revising the schedule of mid-term holidays for primary and high schools for the current academic year. This modification has been ordered with the specific aim of making up the shortfall created by several holidays granted because of torrential rains,

The midterm holidays for the year had earlier been fixed from October 7 to 21. This holiday has now been changed from October 14 to 21. Letters modifying the holidays have already been sent to all the schools and high schools through the block education officers of respective taluks.

Because of unprecedented rainfall, holidays totalling to nine days had been given between May and August this year in Dakshina Kannada. Some more holidays had to be given in Sullia, Puttur, and Bantwal blocks in view of the critical situation there. Therefore, the department has decided to operate classes during the holiday period to ensure that there is no shortfall of study hours. Even after this modification, if the total days of studies cannot be made up, schools have to conduct classes for full day on Saturdays and by cutting short local holidays so that the studies of the students are not affected. The respective schools have to draw up plans accordingly.

The letter has asked the schools to draw up time tables for the mid-term examinations, duly taking into account the extended duty hours till October 14. It has asked the schools to use the entire month of September for teaching.

Deputy director of public instruction, Udupi, has asked the schools in that district to adjust the rain holidays by making suitable adjustments in respective schools. Three days holidays had been given in Udupi on account of heavy rains. These holidays have been sought to be set off by conducting classes on Saturday afternoons or by cancelling some other holidays.

Instead of reducing the midterm holidays , they must have reduced the winter holidays , which are unnecessarily too many!

Instead of cutting down on the holidays, it would have been better to cut down and filter the rubbish which is fed to children as education...………. Most of what is drilled into a child's head by force is useless in today's world.

Studies is important, so a good midterm and Summer vacations.
Children need to play, should get free time from studies to relieve stress.
Children's are not machines. Give then full quota of vacations.

No wonder the education system is a failure in the country.

The aim should be to provide a well rounded academic and vocational education system, with a proper study-life balance, so that the student achieves the confidence to take on any career disciplines later in life - but that does not seem to be the main criteria of the authorities.

The secondary aim should be to finish the syllabus in time by giving teachers the flexibility to plan accordingly - but that also seems to be lost here.

The only criteria it seems is that the schools should remain open for business for a minimum of 220 days. Will achieving this magic number ensure a successful future for our children ?

We are a country that sadly still worships the system of rote learning and heaping lots of home and project work along with abundance of exams and unit tests. Unless that is improved, we will harvest the same fruits tomorrow, as the quality of seeds we plant today.

Only lord BRAHMA can save us from going back to stone age era...,
It is even more pathetic to see the seers/swamiji's sitting in temple of democracy instead of sitting in holy temple and preaching / practicing religious values to people the real tenets of Hinduism like - "vasudhaiva kutumbam.., sarva dharma samabhava.., ahimsa paramo dharma...., etc.,"

So if my children are in primary school, should they deserve preferential treatment ? Does this not remind of another society ailment we face today - the reservation system ?

I guess you dint get my point; my daughter is in 1st grade, first of all they have classes 6 days a week compared to other CBSE's abroad which is 5 days a week, so where is the time for other activities for these little kids?, so in my opinion they should have exempted primary school kids from this decision!

@ Raks Dsouza - I agree with you and feel that you missed my point. Children big or small look forward to the mid term break. Why should any child be punished ?

Our schools work 6 days a week and my child was only given 2days off for the rains, now a very small vacation. Really bad. What we are trying to achieve is to exhibit the number of days the school was functional. However, quality of education is at stake.
