New Delhi: Raped Orissa Nun Surfaces, Recounts Horror

Rediff

New Delhi, Oct 24: Two months after a nun was allegedly raped during the communal violence in Orissa, the victim came out in public on Friday for the first time recounting her traumatic experience and demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the incident, charging police of being "friendly" with attackers.

With her face masked, the bespectacled nun in her early 30s accused the Orissa police of failing to protect her from attackers and not being responsive.

Reading out from a four-page hand-written statement at a packed press conference, Sister Meena said she was dragged by a mob of 40-50 people, her clothes ripped apart and was raped on a verandah strewn with glass pieces as two of the attackers stood on her hands.

"They pulled out my saree and one of them stepped on my right hand and another on my left hand and then a third person raped me on the verandah," the nun, who did not take any questions, recounted in a choked voice.

The nun had chosen to maintain a low profile and stayed away from public gaze soon after the incident.

Her account comes two days after the Supreme Court ruled out a CBI inquiry into the August 25 incident and asked her to cooperate with the state police in the investigation.

"The state police failed to stop the crime, failed to protect me from the attackers. They were friendly with the attackers and they tried their best that I did not register an FIR nor make complaints against police which did not take down my statement as I narrated in detail. They abandoned me...," she claimed.

"I was raped and I do not want to be victimised. I want a CBI probe," said the nun.

On August 24 around 4:30 p.m., the nun said she heard a mob shouting at the gate of Divyajyoti Pastoral Centre in Kandhamal so she ran out through the backdoor and escaped to the forest along with others.

"We saw our house going up in flames. Around 8:30 pm we came out and went to the house of a Hindu gentleman who gave us shelter," the nun, who was flanked by Mother Superior of Pastoral Centre Sister Vineeta and her lawyer Wangsum Ravei, said.

The nun said the next day (August 25) around 1:30 pm, the mob armed with lathis, axes, spades, iron rods, crowbars and sickles stormed her room.

"One of them slapped me, caught my hair and pulled me out of the house. Two of them were holding my neck to cut off my head with an axe. Others said that I should be taken out on the road. I saw Father Chellan also being taken out and being beaten," she said.

The mob led them to the burnt down Janavikas Building saying they were going throw them into the smouldering remains, she said.

The nun said when they reached the building, she was taken to the verandah where ashes and broken glass pieces were strewn.

"One of them tore my blouse and others my under-garments. Father Chellan protested and they beat him and pulled him out from there," she said.

After she was sexually assaulted, the nun said, she tried to get up and then another man caught her and took her near the staircase where he attempted to rape her.

"I hid under the staircase. The crowd was shouting where is that sister. Come, let us rape her... They took me out on the road. There I saw Father Chellan kneeling down and the crowd was beating him," she said.

The nun said when they reached the market place, about a dozen policemen were present.

"I went to them asking them to protect me and sat in the middle of two policemen. But they did not move. Someone from the crowd pulled me from there and wanted to lock us in a nearby temple," she said.

The nun and the priest were then taken to the police outpost in Nuagaon. The policemen there were talking in a "very friendly" manner with the attackers, she said.

Despite attempts by Orissa government, the nun had remained untraceable and was believed to have taken shelter in a church in Delhi.

Eight persons were arrested in connection with the rape case and Orissa police has decided to conduct DNA test on some of the accused.

The Archbishop of Cuttack had in a petition in the Supreme Court sought Rs 3 crore compensation for demolition of churches in the anti-Christian riots in Orissa, while seeking a CBI inquiry into attacks on Christians.

I think these goons and politicians who have assumed leadership of Hindu society are taking Hinduism to its ruins. I think sensible and erudite Hindus should fight to take back their noble religion from these rouge elements from Sangh Parivar. This is a struggle only the Hindus can do, no one else can do it for them. This is a long difficult struggle from them to get Hinduism back from the hands of fanatics. India was a great nation and will remain a great nation for all its citizens then.

I know the kind of selfless service the members belonging to the Congregation of the victimized Nun render to the poorest of the poor in the world, including those in India. I have personally visited many of their Homes and have first hand experience of their Charity as well as austere but peaceful lifestyle. I can boldly stste that no one born of a human mother would even think of hurting them in the slightest, let alone doing such abominable things to these angels of mercy, as the 40-50 strong horde did to this poor Nun in Orissa.

To further substantiate this assertion, even Saddam Hussein treated them with great respect when some of these Nuns provided humanitarian service to the suffering common people of Iraq, who were the victims of the sanctions imposed on that country by the West. One could say the perpetrators who have dealt with the poor Sister in this heinous manner are certainly not Hindus, as correctly pointed out by others in their comments.

Even so, don’t they have a wife, a sister, a daughter, or at least a mother. How would they feel if any one of these four were subjected to the humiliation which they shamelessly meted out on the Orissa Nun ?

However, still the CBI also not able to trace the truth for one or the other reasons!!!! In such a situation how can we expect the same inquiry will give justice?

Yesterday was Black Friday, this morning newspaper's the truth by our Dear sister in Orissa the day she will never forget in all her lfe, So lets take it as Black Saturday. Is this the prize our faithful have to pay for all what they do for the good of society. CM Naveen Patnaik has requested a fast-track court will it help the cause! Can we as a Catholic community bear to read the print in the media the way our Sister went through that trauma of life, is it not heart breaking, for how long are we going to be a soft target!

The first nail should go to the police on the very site that this sad trauma took place, they should be suspended to a far remote area of isolation. While the SC says there is no need of a CBI inquiry, its good that the CBCI Bishop John Dayal has requested for a review on the same. Let us all say a prayer for our dear Sister in this hour of need where her very own photograph has been all out in the media world.God Bless

Lets pray for all these offenders that God will forgive them for what they have done.Lets be true followers of Christ regardless of which church we go. Jesus said, Heaven and Earth will pass away but my words will not. We know whom we serve and let him fight the battle and deal the way he wants. What a shame. The culprits are worse than animals. God will surely punish, but that's going to be more brutal than these animals would have ever thought. Respect for humans and humanity is totally lost. & our police politicians....uff...hats off to them.

It's a shame of worst kind. Those attackers are an insult to Hinduism. Ghatashraddha should be performed to those uncivilised animals. We worship women as "devi", and this is how they rape women. Why could not these uncivilised beasts rape their own mothers/ sisters? Why should they humiliate Hindu religion and bring disgrace on Hinduism - uncultured. They dont' belong to Hindu religion. They are a shame, disgrace. Get rid of those animals.

It is pathetic what the nun is undergoing. It is difficult for a woman to tolerate this atrocity. It is high time that we remind ourselves that we are human beings, and not animals. If the nun is telling the truth then it should be taken seriously. I remember that the news channels reported this incident immediately after the unfortunate killing of the holy swamiji. Then it must be true. Women may not say lies that they are raped, and in this case this one is a nun.

There is a truth. This is inhuman from the part of the police, and now they are exposed so they will not cooperate with her for sure. Already they have threatened her with dire consequences. The police who were under pressure have not cooperated with her. The case must be transferred to a court outside Orissa. The whole world is watching, and it is a bad name for the Hindus. The culprits must be punished as per the law.

Did the supreme court find the issue of rape too insignificant for the CBI? It is really shameful that the judicial system does not take a stand and make the culprits answerable for their crime. What surprises us most is the fact that the court has asked the nun to cooperate with the police in the investigation. What is there to investigate? The police were on the site of the crime and watching while the crowd was torturing and raping.

After two months of the said incident, the police are still on deciding stage to conduct DNA. For Christ’s sake, the nun is a victim of unthinkable crimes committed publicly by the mob with police as witness and she is asking for justice. Sister Meena has been made to suffer the worst type of degradation and CBI should be directed to investigate this issue immediately. Our prayers are with you Sister Meena.

Is this our Culture? raping women... where is the BJP who wanted to impose death sentence to rapist?? ha ha its a joke... cruel one! To say majority community was angered in Orissa does not give any justification of rape in this case or the countless female foeticides taking place in India. ... what culture is this violence against women.... any one ?
