Petrol, diesel prices shoot to new record highs

New Delhi, Sep 9 (PTI): Petrol and diesel prices set new records on Sunday as they continued their upward march on fall in rupee and surge in global crude oil rates.

Petrol price was Sunday raised by 12 paise a litre and diesel by 10 paise per litre, according to the price notification issued by state fuel retailers. The increase pushed the petrol price in Delhi to Rs 80.50 per litre. Diesel rate touched its highest level of Rs 72.61 a litre.

Fuel prices in Delhi are the cheapest among all metros and most state capitals due to lower taxes. Opposition parties have called for a nation-wide 'Bharat Bandh' on Monday (September 10) to protest against the spiralling fuel prices. They blame the government's unwillingness to cut excise duty for the high fuel prices and consumer burden.

Since mid-August, petrol price has risen by Rs 3.42 a litre and diesel by Rs 3.84 per litre as rupee hit record low against the US dollar, making imports costlier. Almost half of the retail selling price of the two fuels is made up of central and state taxes. According to oil companies, petrol at refinery gate costs around Rs 40.50 a litre and diesel Rs 43.

The Centre currently levies a total excise duty of Rs 19.48 per litre of petrol and Rs 15.33 per litre on diesel. On top of this, states levy Value Added Tax (VAT) -- the lowest being in Andaman and Nicobar Islands where 6 per cent sales tax is charged on both the fuels. Mumbai has the highest VAT of 39.12 per cent on petrol, while Telangana levies the highest VAT of 26 per cent on diesel.

Delhi charges a VAT of 27 per cent on petrol and 17.24 per cent on diesel. The Central government had raised excise duty on petrol by Rs 11.77 a litre and that on diesel by 13.47 a litre in nine installments between November 2014 and January 2016 to shore up finances as global oil prices fell, but then cut the tax just once in October last year by Rs 2 a litre.

This led to its excise collections from petro goods more than doubling in the last four years -- from Rs 99,184 crore in 2014-15 to Rs 2,29,019 crore in 2017-18. States saw their VAT revenue from petro goods rise from Rs 1,37,157 crore in 2014-15 to Rs 1,84,091 crore in 2017-18.

Congratulation for PM Modi and BJP for Petrol prices increase which has now crossed even his old age mother.
November 9 is once again approaching. I am afraid that PM Modi with sliding Rupee to Dollar, may make 'Demonetization' of Dollar this time around and surprise President Donald Trump.

Now RSS will bring some new issue at national level to deflect the citizens attention from real issues.

This spiraling increase of fuel prices one of the highest in South East Asia from PM Modi's BJP government is nothing but to offset the election preparation for 2019 Lok Sabha to retain the power in center.

The "fuel loot" had resulted in the Modi government profiting ₹11 lakh crore. In May 2014, he said, the excise duty on petrol was ₹9 per litre, while today it is ₹19 per litre. "Similarly, the excise duty on diesel in 2014 was ₹3 and today it is around ₹15.”

By increasing fuel prices, the Modi government has collected ₹11 lakh crore. Where has this huge money gone?

If BJP can offer Rs 100 crores for opposition party MLA's in Karnataka, the party can even buy entire opposition.

I fail to understand the procedure of hiking prices, while petrol is 3,42 and diesel is 3.82 since August If crude price is increased and the rupee is depreciated prices of Petrol and Diesel will go high for sure. But the increase has to be proportional. But in our case it is going in opposite way. Why...?????? Can anybody throw some light on this....????? I strongly think BJP government along with petroleum refineries are cheating public. Now please do not try to convince me that the crude is having less diesel and it is so......!!!!!!!

Hike in oil price is something that cannot be controlled by the Indian Government. The BJP cannot be blamed for the current situation for the same reason they cannot be credited for the low price we had till recently. Though India produces oil, it is not even enough for our domestic market and more than 70% of its requirement it needs to import.
There are two reasons for the hike in price: one is increase in the gas price internationally and two, the depreciation of Rupee. Hitherto the BJP reaped the benefits of low oil price. Many people were under the impression that BJP came to power and reduce the oil price. Now it’s the time for them to face the real scenario.

No country would expect to lose their revenues (petrodollars). Opec countries are mostly united in governing the oil price . They know over production leads oversupply and oil price will fall. They will never act as per importing countries wish.

    Presently,
Petro Price all over India in the range Rs. 80.- to Rs.90.-
    Diesel price " " " 70.- to Rs.80.-
Depending on current trend and if fuel price continues to ascend:
    Come 2019:
Petrol may cost Rs. close to 150.-
    Diesel not less than 130.-
Unless Modi plays some election formula to reduce drastically to win people mandate (purely temporary bases)
