Leaders of neighbouring countries should be like neighbours: Modi

New Delhi, Sep 10 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said leaders of neighbouring countries should be like neighbours who meet and visit each other frequently without any elaborate protocols.

"I have said it earlier too that the leaders of neighbouring countries should have neighbour-like relations with each other. They should feel free to speak with one another, visit each other whenever they feel like. On this, they should not be bound by the restrictions of protocol," Modi said while jointly inaugurating three projects in Bangladesh through video conference.

Modi said this closeness is evident in the frequent interactions between him and Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Modi, along with Sheikh Hasina, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, jointly inaugurated three projects in Bangladesh.

The projects include a 500 MW additional power supply from India to Bangladesh through the existing Baharampur-Bheramara interconnection, the Akhaura-Agartala rail link and the rehabilitation of the Kulaura-Shahbazpur section of Bangladesh Railways.

Speaking on the occasion, Modi appreciated Sheikh Hasina's vision of restoring connectivity with India to the way it was before 1965. He said that in the last few years there has been steady progress towards this goal.

Today, we have increased our power connectivity and started two projects to increase our railway connectivity, he said.

Modi said that with the completion of Baharampur-Bheramara power supply project, 1.16 GW of power is now being supplied from India to Bangladesh.

"This journey from megawatts to gigawatts is symbolic of a golden era in the relations between India and Bangladesh," Modi said.

The Prime Minister said that Akhaura-Agartala rail connectivity will provide another link in the cross-border connectivity between the two countries.

Modi appreciated Sheikh Hasina's development goals of transforming Bangladesh into a middle income country by 2021, and a developed country by 2041.

He said that closer relations and people-to-people links between the two countries would take development and prosperity to new heights.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali also joined the video conference from Delhi and Dhaka respectively.

Dear Modiji, charity begins at home!. You don't like any one and treat as enemies who ever is not connected with BJP!!!!. If you don't do this first, our neighbours will not believe you!!!. That's the reason our friendly countries Sri Lanka, Maldives, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar are moving towards China!!!

The Gujju-bhai and his Government imposed a blockade on Nepal in 2015.

Nepal could not use the only port available to them for months - the Indian port of Kolkata.

Then Nepal naturally gravitated towards China. Now China has made four Chinese ports acceccible to Nepal. Although geographically distant from Kathmandu, these ports will be highly efficient.

When it takes three months to receive goods from the Kolkata port, it might take three days to receive the goods arriving at the Chinese ports.

The Gujju-bhai's Government preaches one thing, but has no clue on what to practice.

India under Gujju-bhai's watch has permanently lost Maldives as a friend.

Modi wants to be close with all his neighbours and gave example of his close relations and frequent visits to Sheikh Hasina. But the main question is when are you going to improve your relations with your own wife ? At least give her the respect she deserves.

We fully and wholeheartedly agree with Prime Minister Modi in all his objectives and aspirations with our neighbors on various areas of our cooperation and collaboration as well as our friendly relations.

Unfortunately, we have our immediate neighbors such as Pakistan, China and Bangladesh who have their own daily priorities and preferences in their political and economical life added with many other necessities of life.

We have to be very watchful on all our friendly commitments and we need to respect all our neighborly commitments so long as we do not allow our neighbors to misinterpret our friendly attitudes that can enable them to arrive at any wrong judgements.

Our bilateral relations with our neighbors are essential, but each of these relations need be guarded preciously so that our neighbors continue to respect us and honor all our commitments for a lasting peace and harmony between neighbors and friends.

Under PM Modi's BJP ruling Bangladesh and Afghanistan are the only nations have some good relations.
Due to three months of blockage of India in Nepal for essential commodity and fuel in the past, China has filled the vacuum by giving free access to three of its ports.
In the South, Sri Lanka are much happy to give its strategic port to Chinese for long term lease which will be direct threat to the India's national security.
The relations with neighboring countries is one of the lowest in all time. The long policies have only strengthened the interest of China and Pakistan.
