Was offered Rs 5 crore to spare bishop in rape case: Kerala nun's brother

Kochi, Sep 12(DC): The brother of the Kerala nun who has accused the bishop of rape alleged that he was offered a bribe of Rs 5 crore if the complaint is withdrawn, according to an NDTV report.

According to a report, a relative of Franco Mulakkal and two other priests approached the brother’s friend and conveyed the message that they are willing to pay Rs 5 crore if the nun withdraws her complaint.

According to police sources, a high-level meeting will be held today ahead of hearing in Kerala High Court tomorrow. A notice is likely to be issued to summon the bishop and decision about his arrest will be taken in the meeting.

The Kerala High Court has asked the police for details on the steps taken as part of the investigation in the rape case.

The court has also sought to ask the details of the provisions made for the protections of the nuns.

The nun has also petitioned the Vatican alleging that the bishop is using “political and money power” to bury the case.

The nun, in her letter to Giambattista Diquattro, Vatican’s Apostolic Nuncio alleged that by continuing as Jalandhar diocese bishop, Franco Mulakkal and his associates “are using the wealth of the diocese to divert” the police investigation.

The nun who is in her later 40s alleged that she was sexually abused by Franco Mulakkal 13 times between 2014 and 2016.

However, all the allegations have been denied by the bishop.

Any rape victim, may take a few days, but surely lodge the complain at the police station. The question here is, why the nun took 4 years to complain? So long she kept quiet means, there is no complain. When the transfer for her was announced, she then started accusing the Bishop.

Nun must now confess the reason why she didn't complain at the very first attempt if it is so? She should have told the superior of the convent immediately. She should be arrested and questioned why she kept quiet. The exact will be know.

I didn't expect such a comment from a woman. She remained silent for so long in order to preserve her dignity and to maintain the reputation or sanctity of the church. You being a woman, can you imagine the mental agony and trauma of a rape victim? In her letter to the Vatican she has mentioned about her first complaining to her Superior General who turned a deaf ear to hide the scandal. Investigations will reveal why her Superior ignored her complaint. Finally she was compelled to take this shameful issue out of the church and complained to the police. Now let the law of the land take its course and let the guilty be punished.

Vatican has no role to play in this matter. If there is a crime committed, India has enough laws to deal with it.

Regardless, the nun never said a word until the Bishop ordered her transfer in 2018. She resented the transfer. She tried in different ways to stop the transfer.

When all her attempts failed, she accused the bishop of committing crimes between 2014 and 2016. As expected, police have found nothing against the bishop.

If the allegation of attempts to bribe the victim is true, this is very disgraceful.

We the faithful do little sacrifices and in order to put together our little offerings, thinking that it will reach the needy. If the needy are the religious leaders fulfilling their lust, this is very disgraceful.

Nobody is above the law. Whether a ordained priest or a poor worshiper, the law of the land should be made applicable indiscriminately.

13 times "happened" in 2years" and after two years nun realised it was RAPE? Really confusing. The investigation should find what was the reason/pressure for not revealing it for so long.

Shame on these people of religious order.
For two years she had her mouth shut
Punish the guilty and ex-communicat them. From 2014 till date she acted as a digified, religious person. No mercy/sympathy on the gender basis.
