Mangalore: Multi-talented Musician Fr Charles Vas Bags ‘Kalakaar Puraskar ‘08’

Mangalore, Oct 31: Fr Charles Vas SVD, bagged the ‘Kalakaar Puraskar-2008’, instituted by Thomas Stephen’s Konkani Kendra, ‘Karval Gharaannem’, in association with Mandd Sobhann, for his outstanding contributions in the field of Konkani devotional music.
Fr Vas was born to devout parents Jacob and Seraphine Vas on February 12, 1944, in Omzoor parish, Bantwal. He joined the Society of Divine Word (SVD) and was ordained a priest in 1976. He is a multi-faceted musician, who has composed and directed devotional music for over two and a half decades.
Fr Vas has a doctorate in Indian Classical music (vocal) from the Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal, Mumbai. He is presently serving as director of Sangeet Avhinay Academy, a religious institution of song and dance, in Mumbai.
The ‘Kalakaar Puraskar-2008’ will be conferred by Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy president Narayan Kharvi, during the 83rd monthly theatre ‘Konn Tum Anja’ at Kalangan amphitheatre, at 6.00 p m on Sunday November 2. The award consist of Rs 25,000 in cash, a memento, and a citation letter.
