Mangalore: Kalkura Announces names of District Rajyotsav Awardees

Mangalore, Oct 31: Pradeepkumar Kalkura, president of district Kannada Sahitya Parishat, announced the names of the 26 people who have been selected for the district Rajyotsav awards for 2008, at a press conference held on Thursday October 30.

The award winners are—Umapati Shastry, Dharmasthala (literary-research), G S Ubaradka, Sullia (literature), Dr S Mohandas Nayak Mangalore (medical-social service- education), Vasanti Kadire, Mangalore (women literature), Devu Poojary, Puttur (Kambla), Srinivas Rao, Mangalore (children’s' literature), Kudmar S Venkataraman, Puttur (classical music), Machendranath, Pandeshwar (drama), Shashikala teacher, Kasargod (border-classical dance), Bhojaran, Moodbidri (classical Nagaswara), S Srinivas Prabhu, Mangalore (Konkani literature), Peruvodi Narayan Bhat, Puttur (Yakshagana), Harekal Balakrishna Achar, Mangalore (sculpture), Keshav P Shettigar, Suratkal (Tulunadu martial art), David, Bantwal (painting), N S Gokhale, Beltangady (co-operative), Sudhakar Rao Pejavar, Mangalore (cultural), Kedishwaran P, Subrahmanya (traditional instrumental music), A Shivananda Karkera, Mangalore (literature-Tulu drama), Vittal Rao B, Subramanya (rural journalism), Jagannath Shetty Bala, Suratkal (journalism), Srikant Rao B, Mangalore (visual media), Abdul Rahim, B C Road (Beary literature), Bhaskar Bangera , Mangalore (traditional Bhoota worship) and Poovamma, Mangalore (sports).



Siddiq, and also posthumously Kamalaksha, Shahul Hameed, Rafiq, Asif and Mohammed Ashraf, who risked their lives to save school children from the recent bus mishap in the Gurpur River, at Ulaibettu, will also be felicitated on the state Rajyotsav day, Saturday November 1.

A grand procession will be held from Bunts Hostel to Nehru Maidan on Saturday November 1. Well-known litterateur Erya Lakshmi Narayan Alva will inaugurate the procession at 8.00 am and Goltamajal G Abdul Khader will handover the state flag.

The awards ceremony and the felicitation will be held later at Nehru Maidan, and will be presided over by district in-charge minister Krishna Palemar. Deputy commissioner (DC) M Maheshwar Rao, city mayor Ganesh Hosabettu, MLAs Yogish Bhat and U T Khader, as well as Bunts’ Association president Amarnath Shetty, will be present on the occasion, said Kalkura.

A poetry recital and cultural programmes will be held at the Town Hall from 3.00 pm onwards, he added. The DC, Prabhakar Sharma, DC’s headquarters assistant, and Ramalinge Gowda, district information officer, were also present at the press meet.
