Justice Ranjan Gogoi sworn in as 46th Chief Justice of India by Prez Kovind

New Delhi, Oct 3(DC): Justice Ranjan Gogoi was today sworn in as the 46th Chief Justice of India (CJI) by President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.

Gogoi, the first CJI from the north-east, will succeed Dipak Misra and serve a tenure of 13 months up to November 17, 2019.

Outgoing CJI Dipak Misra had recommended Gogoi, the senior-most judge after Misra, in September this year followed by President Kovind confirming the appointment.

Justice Ranjan Gogoi was among the four judges who, in January, criticised Misra in an unprecedented press conference and accused him of misusing his role of assigning cases as the Supreme Court's Master of the Roster.

Justice Gogoi began his legal career in Gauhati High court in February 2001 and from there went on to be appointed as the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2011.

He moved to the Supreme Court in 2012 and since then has been part of significant cases including the setting up special courts to fast-track cases against politicians.

Currently, Justice Gogoi has been monitoring the compilation of the National Register for Citizens in Assam which is intended to identify illegal immigrants in the state.

As CJI, he will also head the three-judge Bench for the controversial Ayodhya case which is slated to be held later this month.

Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra retires after a tumultuous year in office, perhaps the most controversial in the history of the Supreme Court of India. How do we judge such a judge?

Misra’s controversial tenure was in a way foretold. The seeds were sown much earlier. In 1985, a district magistrate in Cuttack had declared that Misra had made a fraudulent representation about his economic background to purchase a plot of land under a government scheme. Misra continued with his judicial functions in the apex court, and despite activists raising the question of propriety in his appointment to the country’s top judicial position, he took oath of office on August 28, 2017.Within a month of Misra taking over as chief justice came what is now called the “medical colleges scam”.
Four senior judges of the Supreme Court who comprised the collegium at the time – Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, Madan B Lokur and Kurian Joseph – met the press in January and, in the process, laid out a series of questions on the functioning of the CJI in assigning cases to particular benches. The press conference happened in the context of a petition seeking an investigation into the death of Maharashtra judge BH Loya. At the time of his death in November 2014, Loya was adjudicating the case relating to the alleged staged encounter killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh. One of the accused at that time was BJP president Amit Shah, but he was discharged from the case in December that year.
CJI Misra had come under the scanner for allegedly transferring sensitive political cases to favourable benches.

Congratulations to Mr. Gagoi to be in the post of Chief Justice of Supreme Court. We hope there will be paritiality in all types of cases. Sanghis might be applying mirchi now. I hope Mr. Gagoi will respect the innocents and punish the culprits. Mr. Gagoi should not bow to pressure from political parties or leaders and do the justice to people. |there are many injustice done by the current regime. Innocents are being killed for no reason. Minorities are unsafe. Police are not doing their duty in proper way. UP police is just like sanghi agents. We wish new CJI all the best and hope truth will get success and real terrorists and culprits will be booked and punishe3d.

Dear Pooki, Mangalore you are absolutely right. Misra was favoring sanghis and its welcome move that he is no more in the position. We dont need such judges who cannot hanle the case and make partiality. We hope Mr. Gagoi is the right choice for the position and we expect justice from him.
