Mangalore: Son Ends Life by Jumping into Mother's Funeral Pyre

Mangalore, Nov 7: In a heart-rending incident, the son of a woman, unable to bear the death of his mother, jumped into the flames of her funeral pyre at Panja Koikude near Haleangady village in the taluk, on Wednesday November 5.
Saroja Udupa (64), wife of the retired village accountant Subrahmanya Udupa, died due to ill health on Tuesday. Her son Madhava Udupa (35), who is mentally unsound and is undergoing treatment for the same at the Manasa Hospital run by Dr Ashok Pai in Shimoga, had been brought here on Tuesday night to take part in the funeral rites. After completing the rituals and lighting the pyre of his mother, Madhav was returning from the spot when all of a sudden he rushed back towards the pyre, jumped into it and died, said his brother-in-law Ramakrishna Rao, in a complaint filed with the Mulky police station.
Efforts were made to stop the man from committing suicide. However, because of high flames, Madhav's face and abdomen portions had been completely burnt and he died on the spot before he could be rescued, it is gathered.
