Trump turns down India's invite for Republic Day celebrations

New Delhi, Oct 28 (Agencies): US President Donald Trump has turned down the Indian government's invite to visit India on the occasion of Republic Day. This, TOI has learnt, was conveyed in the form of a letter from US authorities to NSA Ajit Doval recently.

The letter is said to have comprised a regret message from Trump. The US president's domestic commitments, notably his State of the Union (SOTU) address, around that time of the year are apparently the reason for Trump not accepting India's invite.

Trump's response though is in sharp contrast to the one from his predecessor Barack Obama who, despite faced with the same domestic presidential obligations in 2015, agreed to visit India as Republic Day chief guest.

TOI had first reported on July 13 that India had officially invited Trump for Republic Day. While the US had confirmed the invite, it had said that the final decision would be taken after the inaugural 2+2 dialogue in September.

Indo-US ties have been under a lot of strain lately because of differences over India's defence purchases from Russia and also its oil imports from Iran.

Despite the US dangling the threat of CAATSA, the government went ahead and signed a deal to purchase S-400 air missile defence system with Russia during President Vladimir Putin's visit to India. In an interaction with some Indian journalists after Putin's visit, Russian ambassador Nikolay Kudashev complimented India for, as he said, following an independent foreign policy.

India has also refused to stop, or even cut down drastically, oil imports from Iran. As US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had said after the 2+2 dialogue here, US' "expectation" was that India, and indeed other countries, would bring down oil imports from Iran to zero by November 4 to avoid sanctions. India has said that it will be guided solely by its energy interests and its public sector companies are learnt to have already placed crude import orders with Iran for the month of November.

The US formal response to India's invite brings to an end months of intense speculation about whether or not he would visit India for Republic Day celebrations. At one stage, in fact, India was so keen to host Trump that it offered to consider another set of dates for the visit in the month of February to avoid clash with SOTU. However, the fact that the NDA-2 is now into its final year also seems to have played on Trump's mind in turning down India's invite.

Exactly why the Modi government chose to invite another US President, after Obama in 2015, for Republic Day remains open to speculation. Sources here said that the government had always chosen Republic Day guest with the domestic audience in mind. The presence of a high-profile leader, it is felt, helps carry forward Modi's message, which the PM has often spoken about in his election speeches, about India's rising power and prestige in the global world.

The Congi slaves are now turning Trump supporters. Prior elections they were on Hilarys side as she was a supporter of 'peace lovers' . The great Poojri even did a special Pooja for a victory. Hilary lost . Now these Congi slaves are on Trumps side and support when he does some anti India or anti Modi moves.

Trump is a Republican whose party has a history of taking anti-India stands on almost all issues concerning India.

Yet Trump managed to maintain close ties with India when compared his party predecessors like George Bush, Reagan or Nixon.

When presidents and PMs of major world nations attended the funeral of Indira Gandhi, the US was represented by Secretary of State, George Schultz. This was one of the issues being discussed in those days.

All past US presidents who had visited India, from Kennedy to Obama were Democrats. Now even though Trump has cordial relations with India, he prefers to maintain the Republican tradition of not to visit the country.

Americans understand Indian leader’s capacity and outward friendship (especially Modi's). Indians are well known for shaking their head for yes or no but not a firm word from tongue. Acting very friendly with USA and awarding all defense orders to third countries like France, Russia, and Israel. Why they get?

This invitation was given in July and was kept on hold. The invitation was given basically to please Mr. Trump in order to impress him and get concessions for tariffs he was going to implement and the potential oil prices due to his policies.

Knowing the kind of person he is I doubted that time itself that Trump will not accept the invitation.

No good new s for Pakistan and China either.
Trump has already cut the aid for Pakistan from 295 million a year to bare 82 million, for maintaining a few facilities.
On China he has levied already 35% tariffs on all of their goods imported, without leaving a needle and thread, to make China to come to negotiations about bilateral trade tariffs imposed by China on US goods.

Man Mohan, Narashima Rao, Rajiv, Indira & Neharu were invited for state dinner in US and when US President said 'sit' they used to sit, 'stand' and they used to stand.
Now we have a Prime Minister in India who stands for the benefits of Indians . He doesn't care whether he is invited to whitehouse or not.
If it is good for India, we will import oil from Iran too.

    Mr. Shankar, Mangaluru,
You are wrong, During the regime of Man Mohan, Narashima Rao, Rajiv, Indira & Nehru ,India was in Non Aligned Group and friend and supporter of US Arch enemy Former Soviet Union. (Russia) Pakistan was always US friend and US arms purchaser. Indian economy, arms race and support was with Soviet union. During Congress regime US was not India friend. Man Mohan, Narashima Rao, Rajiv, Indira & Nehru were well educated & internationally respected persons. Modi has no real education, have fake degree and does not have sophisticated culture, Hugs like crazy and only knows to mislead uneducated Indian Citizens. (Please make a note that in International arena & politics Modi culture, style and business dealing are disgrace to my India)

Just tell one instance of Mr. Trump's fekuism. All Americans he delivered what he has promised.
He promised he will cut down taxes, he did it.
He promised he will rehaul health insurance, only Mr. McCain from republicans went against it and could not succeed.
He promised he will lift economy, he did it first time ever in US history to 4.3%, an all time high.
He promised jobs, now the unemployment rate is 3.7% best in 54 years.
Unemployment for Black Americans who lived on Food stamps ( free stipend for unemployment ) has been all time lowest on record.
Unemployment for Hispanic Americans who lived on drug sale and mafia, has been been all time lowest on record.
Unemployment for Asian Americans who lived in gangs and China town massacres, has been all time lowest on record.
He promised he would get out of Paris Accord, he did it, now the USA is largest producer of Oil and Natural Gas all over the world, for that reason Europeans are buying Natural Gas from USA.
He promised he will nominate very ardent conservatives to the Supreme Court, and Federal Courts and he has given them very strict ardent Roman Catholics supreme Court justices who value Life from conception to death, not like Nancy Pelosi who being a Roman Catholic doesnt value of an unborn, giving complete support for abortion at any stage.
It is better to die for such a person, than give help for some one to help in abortions and Gay marriages and to ask the Church run hospitals and church run schools to cater to such.
Trump's rating was 32 % when he was elected, now it has crossed 46%, that is who openly vouch for him. But there are too many silent majority who dont talk about their affiliation but vote for him.
Mr. Jossey you might like what is good for India, but Trump doesnt care what is good for India or any others even for Europeans. He puts it blindly the leaders of those countries have to do things that are good for their own countries. Ofcourse India is 100% corrupt and so are others.

    Dear Alex,
You nailed it in your comments. Donald Trump lived by his election promise, unlike our PM who gave numerous speeches in 2014 with so many assurances, but never worked on them in keeping up those promises he made to people of India. Vast differences between two leaders and Trump knows that he won't get any benefit being seen with a Fekuism with his Indian Counterpart. Good decision by him.
