Mangalore, Nov 14: Though the nationalization of bus routes is still under debate in the city, the KSRTC has started bus service between Chelyar and city on trial basis on Thursday November 14.
KSRTC officials took route survey through this bus on Thursday. Chalyar is located a few kilometers away from Suratkal and has been facing severe transport problems since years.
Those who were displaced from Bala village during the setting up of MRPL were rehabilitated at Chelyar. The rehabilitation colony lacked better transport facility and the residents had to face several problems owing to this. Hence, the locals had formed a committee under the leadership of Venu Vinod Shett, to stage struggle to demand better connectivity, as the situation had not improved in spite of submitting several memorandums to the earlier district-in-charge minister and also transport authorities in the past.
Although a few private buses were issued permits by RTO to ply between Chelyar and city, the bus operators were seemed to be returning from the national highway itself. This had been major problems for the locals since they had to walk a lot reach the colony.
The locals approached the district-in-charge minister Krishna Palemar when the transport minister proposed to nationalize the city routes. Palemar contacted the Deputy Commissioner Maheshwar Rao and asked him to introduce the KSRTC bus service to Chelyar. However, the KSRTC authorities here did not take keen interest to introduce KSRTC bus services to Chelyar, claiming that the roads are narrow. Later Palemar convinced the KSRTC authorities to begin the service on trial basis and submit their report in due course.
Accordingly the KSRTC has finally decided to ply buses to Chelyar on trial basis. This is indeed a big fillip to those who have been demanding nationalization of bus routes in the district.
