Mangalore: Groups in Support of and Against MSEZ Fight in Swamijis' Presence
Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (SP)

Bajpe / Mangalore, Nov 17: Verbal duel soon turned physical between the two groups, one supporting the Mangalore Special Economic Zone(MSEZ) and the other, opposing  it, in the presence of the swamijis who had arrived at Kudibipadav near Permude on Sunday November 16.

There has been an ongoing dispute over the block of  15.3 acres of agricultural  land located in Perumude Kudubi Padav, proposed to be acquired for the MSEZ. The local people have been refusing to hand over land to the MSEZ and are opposed to the demolition of certain religious centres of worship, while the MSEZ claims that the said land has been transferred to it.

To ascertain actual facts, Sri Vishweshateerta Swamiji of Pejawar Math, Kolya Sri Ramananda Swamiji, Gurpur Vajradehi Math Sri Rajashekharananda Swamiji and Kemar Math Sri Esha Vittaladasa Swamiji had arrived at Kudubi Padav. When the swamijis were getting the version of the local people, MSEZ officials came there and placed their side of the story and arguments, supported by documents. The local people belonging to Kudubi community vehemently said that they had not parted with their lands. "We are illiterate. Our lands are being acquired by the MSEZ forcefully and illegally," they claimed. The MSEZ officials refuted this allegation.

When the local people started to shout that the MSEZ officials have resorted to forgery, the environment hotted up. When the swamijis were gathering information about the claims and counter-claims from the president of Krushi Samrakshana Samiti, Madhukar Amin, some MSEZ supporters chided him, by saying that he does not have the locus standi to provide any information nor was he authorised to do so. These comments  drew violent protests, resulting into pushing and jostling among the two groups. The policemen in plain clothes then intervened and brought the situation under  control. They ensured that the situation does not give rise to unsavoury incidents.

Speaking on behalf of the Swamijis, Pejavar Swamiji said that himself and other Swamijis had come there to get first-hand information. "In our presence, goondaism was resorted to , which is unacceptable. Inspite of allegations and counter-allegations, we want to find out actual facts. The Kalavaru Benkinatheshwara temple will not be shifted out. However, the shifting of Daivastanas will be allowed," he told the reporters.

MSEZ chief operating officer A G Pai said that the company has acquired the lands legally and foundation stone had been laid for the project accordingly.  He said that the Daivastanas would be shifted out from the place. The MSEZ acquisition was delayed as the people cultivated the lands here and the land here is in the name of MSEZ, he claimed.

The Kudubis many of them poor and illiterates have been made pawns by the Anti - SEZ activists in their fight against SEZ.Further it is not the first time that a temple will be shifted in this country. There are many instances where religious institutions were shifted or demolished for development activities.MSEZ IS VERY IMPORTANT TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF MANGALORE IN PARTICULAR AND DK IN GENERAL. All these so called activists who are opposing SEZ are opposing for their personal gains and not because they have any sympathies with the farmers or Kudubis. We have seen what had happened in the case of MRPL then and NAGARJUNA now (activists simply took money and stopped their activities thereafter). And also some local papers and notably evening papers should refrain from stoking fire and creating sensationalism. It may help them to sell a few more copies but will push the districts backwards in industrial development.

It is good to see the Swamijis hitting the ground and intervening in such issues. But I do hope the intervention is on behalf of the poor illiterate people and that they will take a just and impartial stand on this issue. The goondaism and violence done right in front of the Swamijis by both parties is disgraceful.

I agree with the stand and decision taken by Sri Sri Sri Vishweshateerta Swamiji of Pejawar Math and other Swamijis. The Kalavaru Benkinatheshwara temple should not be shifted out, and it will not be shifted also. However, the shifting of Daivastanas will be allowed. Since this is religious matter, Swamijis should involve and they have to help the people and society in this regard. This is not publicity. Other readers of this news coverage should not give their negative comments about Swamijis. If so, as per IPC its case of Defamation.

MSEZ is required for the development Coastal Karnataka. The protestor should fight for Good Compensation to the Land loosers, Job opportunities to those who lost land and good job training to them, Priority in jobs for the locals, To maintain good envoirnment by the MSEZ Industries etc. Some vested interested people are against the MSEZ. Now-a-days , what benefits a farmer will get in agriculture. The Cost of production is very high due to labour problem, high cost of fertilizers, water problem, electricity problem etc. Only God should come to the help of farmers and not this politicians and relegious leaders. All are looking at their own benefits. Poor farmers are not understanding the inner politics these so called leaders.

The question arises the land belongs to whom? who handed over to MSEZ? if the land is in MSEZ's name then why locals are opposing it? Did the govt. arranged to the alternative land to the poor people staying over there? why Swamiji intervening in the Land issue?
