New Delhi, Nov 12 (NIE): The Supreme Court will on Monday hear the inquiry report of the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) against Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director Alok Kumar Verma in a bribery case. Verma has been accused of taking a bribe from a Hyderabad-based businessman by Special CBI Director Rakesh Asthana, who himself is accused of indulging in corrupt practices by the former.
The feud between Verma and Asthana escalated last month, leading to the registration of an FIR against Asthana and others, including Deputy Superintendent of Police Devender Kumar, who is in the CBI custody in an alleged bribery case.
After the tussle between the two senior officers became public, the Centre sent both of them on leave and divested the duo of their duties. The decision of the Centre was challenged by Verma in the Supreme Court which issued notices to both the central government and the CVC. The apex court also set a deadline of two weeks for the CVC to complete the preliminary inquiry against the CBI director.
The court had also barred IPS officer M Nageswara Rao, who has been given interim charge of the CBI, from taking any major decision.
