Kodagu, Nov 13: Kodagu district police has arrested freelance contributor Santhosh Thammaiah, along with four others late on Monday night, for allegedly making inflammatory remarks in the backdrop of Karnataka government decision to observe Tipu Jayanthi.

Taking exception of the a news article that appeared in the local Kannada daily 'Kaveri Times', complainant Askar KA alleged that Santhosh was hurting religious sentiments by defaming Prophet Mohammed and inciting communal hatred.

In the article that appeared on 'Kaveri Times' Thammaiah was quoted saying, “centuries ago the 'intolerant' views of a religion from Arab (Islam), propagated by its preacher is the fundamental basis for cruel terrorist like Tipu Sultan.” He was speaking at a public gathering on Tuesday (November 5th) at Freedom Fighters Memorial organised by a group called Prajna Kaveri against the Karnataka government’s decision to hold Tipu Jayanti.

According to few locals, while initially the police was reluctant to file the FIR, however following protest by the Muslim groups in Kodagu, the police relented to lodge the FIR.

Going further, Askar alleged Santhosh also compared Mir Sadiq (Minister of Tipu Sultan, who during the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War allegedly betrayed Tipu Sultan at Seringapatam) to Lord Krishna, thereby hurting the sentiments of the Hindu's as well. The police have filed a complaint under section 295(A) IPC (Insulting religion or religious beliefs) and have produced the Thammaiah at the jurisdictional court. Police have also booked case against four others Sudhakar, Robert Rozario, Rangakarmi Kariappa and Bachatniyanda Appanna on the same grounds.

Meanwhile, BJP's Karnataka General secretary Arvind Limbavali along with other party leaders condemned the arrest of Santhosh. According to Limbavali, Santhosh was arrested for speaking against Tipu Jayanti by the state government and he demanded that all charges be dropped against him. Limbavali threatened state-wide protest if the government attempted to stifle the voice of the journalist.

govt unable to decide which is right & which is wrong. if they have taken action against those who comments on religion & made derogatory comments this would not continue. when the govt taken action on political ground this kind of incident will continue. if we compare all the previous case & this one then we can find out the different meaning of freedom of speech.

Those who are spreading communal hatred should be punished severely. What we want in the society today is peace and harmony, not hatred. Hatred destroys development and economic progress. People from all communities should be respected. We do not need hatred and destruction in the name of religion and caste. Particularly the journalists should work for communal harmony.

Yesterday it is some group mocking the death of Union Minister Anant Kumar. Today it is the turn of some media house communal hatred targeting Muslims. Social media became a new internal threat of the country which wants to be a super economy of the future.
If one follow the same accounts as Narendra Modi, it appears that his personal Twitter feed is filled with rancor and distortion. Twitter handles that give out rape threats, communal threats, are followed by the prime minister of India.
According to the studies, the raise hatred over social media due to lack of Cyber Security Act in India and the contract IT cells hired by political parties like BJP. If India ever needs to be secure, it needs to be the draft law like the United Kingdom or Germany.
Under the German IT Security Act, non-compliance may be subject to administrative fines of up to 100,000 EUR. Non-compliance with the mentioned requirements under the General Data Protection Regulation is subject to fines up to 10 million EUR or 2% of the worldwide annual turnover, whichever is higher.
Is Prime Minister Modi's 'Digital India' will ever learn from the developed nation to put a permanent end to the social media hatred?

Tipu was a butcher and he mainly slaughtered non Muslims who did not accept Islam. This is a fact and it is the hard truth whether you like it or not. The Christian community in Mangalore lost 60,000 of its members and we cannot even mourn our dead? Nor can we speak the truth about the violent Jihad and the absolute terror that was unleashed upon young and old Men, Woman and Children? And what is worse is while we mourn the loss of our loved ones, every year using tax payers money celebrations are held, and we cannot even comment or complain????

In todays world Truth has now become the new hate speech. Any one who even dares to even talk of the mass annihilation of their forefathers hurts the religious sentiments of a particular group of people. If that's the case then just imagine how hurt the descendants of the many survivors of those thousands of Christians and Hindus that Tipu murdered in cold blood should be feeling as we speak

How does one decide when "sentiments" are hurt? Guidelines are required about what sentiments are. Otherwise such arrests are just symbolic and don't have any valid basis.
Examples of guidelines are 1) No remarks for or against any religion and its founders should be made in public meeting to avoid such situations; 2) Ban public display of religion like processions, loud speakers, symbols, etc.

The British Army in India comprised soldiers, commonly called ‘sepoys’ from all religions including Muslims. There was no RSS in the 18th and 19th centuries. Christians sided with the British were mere rumours. During Tipu’s reign, Christians and Konkani speaking Hindus of Mangalore were third or fourth generation migrants from Goa. They were poor, engaged in farming, working for native Hindu landlords and doing other menial jobs. There were no leaders or prominent figures among Christians who could lead people in supporting the British or revolting against Tipu.

You need to understand what is loose talk and what is professional speech with valid proofs. His intention is to spread the truth and it's absolutely necessary to spread truth with valid proof.
