Mangalore, Nov 19: The fact-finding committee appointed by the state government, headed by Justice B K Somashekar, to probe the recent attacks on churches in the state visited Adoration Monastery at Milagres on Tuesday November 18.

The church was reportedly attacked by Bajarang Dal activists on Sunday September 14. Bishop Aloysius Paul D’Souza of Mangalore accompanied Justice Somashekar to the monastery. As many as eleven members of the panel also visited other churches in the city.

Directing the police to submit the report in this connection by Wednesday November 19, Justice Somashekar said that as the commission is a sovereign body, it will prepare a fair report as soon as possible, even though, the government has given it three months to submit its report.

Expressing hope about the commission, Bishop D’Souza said that he is grateful to the state government for appointing a commission to probe the church attacks. ‘I hope the present commission will come up with a fair report,’ said the Bishop.

District commissioner M Maheshwara Rao was present on the occasion.

The facts are in black and white and are already well known to the public. The perpetrators of these attacks have also openly admitted to their crimes. I am not sure what more facts this committee will unearth. This eyewash appears to be an attempt to distort/hide the facts for the state government’s records and nothing but a further waste of time and money.
