Belagavi: Pramoda Devi unhappy about Tipu Jayanti celebration

Daijiworld Media Network - Belagavi (SP)

Belagavi, Nov 15: Queen mother of Wadiyar family, Pramoda Devi, said that personally she does not support celebration of Tipu Jayanti by the state government. She explained that Tipu had heaped lot of miseries on rulers of Wadiyar dynasty.

She was speaking to media persons after inaugurating the physiotherapy department at KLE Hospital here on Wednesday November 14. "I really am not aware about the basis on which the government is celebrating Tipu Jayanti. I am not in favour of this celebration, nor am I against it. If we go on speaking about this issue, it will create more of distress to the mind. Therefore, I prefer to stay away from this issue. I wish that like Tipu Jayanti, birth anniversaries of other heroes who fought for independence and celebrated leaders are also celebrated," she explained.

She stated that she has no interest in fighting the election, and the scion of the dynasty, Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, too is disinterested in politics.

    Shah,

History is full of unique twist and turns that change the course of of history. The Mughals ruled much of India and Aurangazeb was one of the rulers. If things had gone as planned another son of Shah Jahan “Dara Shiok” would have been the ruler. He was very tolerant , more Sufi kind of a guy. He translated some Hindu texts into Urdu. If he were to be a Sultan Hindus and Muslims would have prospered together . Unfortunately he was killed in the battle of succession by Aurangazeb and India got the more radical ruler.

Just as I mentioned earlier history of full of twists and turns but everything works out in the end.

While Tipu Sultan was a controversial figure, we cannot judge him by today’s standards. He was a tyrant to Canara Catholics and Wodeyars, but If he were successful in his mission the British rule in india would have ended sooner. Technically he is the one who planted the seed of resistance against the British.

During the same time Americans were fighting their war of independence from the British. Hypothetically speaking if Tipu were to succeed and Americans were to lose, would India be as successful as America? Just a thought. Did we miss a big opportunity?

However it is possible to forgive but not forget and move on.

Not a single leader died fighting British except Tipu to be even worth to consider celebrate. Wadiyar family contribution is totally zero in fighting against British. Not a single true history says anything as such.

    @Ahmed, Bangalore:

I pity your thought that you measure contributions of the rulers as to whether they died fighting for their country. That is probably the tragedy of our country that we look of heroes among the dead.

What you and I were thought in school history books about Tipu and the Wodeyars was merely a cursory glance and nothing else. So, no point in mudslinging one against the other based on that meniscal knowledge base.

Moreover, Tipu died over two centuries ago. The biggest mistake every ‘expert’ on the subject does is to measure his actions using 21st century yardsticks. It is neither fair nor relevant, because it is just history.

In terms of the Wodeyar family, you might not know anything, but I am 100% certain that you know who Sir Vishweshrayya is. By claiming that the Wodeyar family’s contribution is zero, you actually insulting the legacy of Sir Vishweshrayya. He was the Prime Minister of the State of Mysore and the state jumped way ahead of rest of Indian provinces of his time.

Do you still stand by your statement?

Tipu was not a freedom fighter .He fought the British for his own survival. If he was a freedom fighter he would have forged an alliance with the neighboring kingdoms and fought the British.Instead he annexed Kodagu, inva aded kingdom of Calicut and burnt the the city of Calicut.Invaded Dindigul so on so forth. His only ambition was to establish a dynasty.

Tipu was a conqueror. Travelled to new territories. Marked his name in history
He was against Hindu Muslim Christian- Aim z to expand his kingdom.
Rulers kill their opponents, rather fight venomous enemy .
Wodiyars talk about ruling for years- but these were shadow kings.
Hyder Ali n successor Tipu Sultan were superiors when compared to Wodiyars

British took advantage of Wodiyars- Hyder n Tipu gave them nightmares.

This is known factor that tipu captured around 80000 catholic and march them from mangalore to srirangapatna. inbetween thousands of them killed in nettarakere. and thousands of people died during this journey since it took almost one to two month time. women were raped and converted. men also converted. not only Christians even hindus also killed, temple, churches were destroyed. this was not only limited to mangalore even kodagu, srirangapatna & people of other places suffered, torchered. in such a case how come govt celebrate the jayanthi?

How these royal family become royals even after 70years of independence without the courtesy of British.

Although those who fought against British either their family became poorer or in-recognisable . For eg Tipu, Bose, Bhagat Singh, ashfaqulla Khan, Moulana Abul Kalam Azad and hundreds of freedom fighters. Those who conspired against India got palaces , political hold and estates.

Dear Madame Pramoda Devi. YOu are right , it causes distress to our minds. I too fail to understand why do we support such a tyrant? Tippu made almost 80thousand catholics to march from Mangalore to Srirangapatana with thousands of them killed in nettikere. Many of them died during the journey that took 6 to 8 weeks. Young wemen were raped and converted , some were inducted into his harem. Men were forcibly converted. To mark the death of these thousands of Christians, a cross is erected in Nanthoor. Even then Siddu implemented this Jayanthi to appease a section of minority and the irony is catholics too support.
