Kundapur: Unprecedented Multiple Surgery - Dr Isthiyaq Ahmed Makes Town Proud

Kundapur, Nov 19: Nephrologist Dr Isthiyaq Ahmed, working at Narayana Hrudayalaya, which has carved out a niche for itself in the field of cardiac care in the country, was part of a successful and rare multiple surgery conducted at the hospital, by a team of doctors on a female patient. By taking part in this rare procedure, an unprecedented one in the country, local lad Ahmed has made his home town feel proud.
Bangalore is on its way towards emerging as the medical capital of India by being home to various ultra-modern hospitals where complicated surgeries are conducted. A rare and unprecedented multiple surgery, the first-of-its-kind in the country, was conducted at Narayana Hrudayalaya there, recently. A team of nephrologists headed by Dr Harshit Mehta conducted the surgery.
Neeraja, a diabetic, suffered renal failure and needed periodic dialysis. Her father Ramadoddi Kullayappa from Bellary donated half of his pancreas and one kidney to his 27-year-old daughter who was undergoing untold miseries on account of the above ailments. The surgery was very unique, as it required simultaneous transplantation of pancreas and kidney (SPK) from the live donor to his daughter.
Dr Isthiyaq Ahmed was one among the nephrologists who took part in the surgery, and he says, that the successful surgery would almost double the life span of the patient. People from the town take pride in the fact that Ahmed hails from their own town and wish him a bright future in his professional career.
Incidentally, the surgery cost about Rs 10 lac, but Narayana Hrudayalaya charged only Rs 4 lac to the family and absorbed the rest of the cost by waiving remaining charges.
Dr Isthiyaq Ahmed is the son of Abdul Khader, a resident of A K Manzil, Kharvi Keri near here. He is the son-in-law of former illustrious police commissioner G A Bava.
