Mangalore, Nov 21: The National Library Week and Book Exhibition jointly organized by the  city and the  district central library was held at the  central library of  Light House Hill  here on Wednesday November 19.

Speaking on the occasion after inaugurating the programme,MLA N Yogish Bhat said, that the library is like a prayer hall in a house.Reading of good books always  gives more  satisfaction as  compared to the happiness gained through  praying, he opined..

Television, computers and the internet may provide information and entertainment together,  but it can not be denied, that  reading is superior to viewing programmes . Today, we come across literature that is aimed at breaking the society. Instead,  the books which holds  the country, state and humanity in high esteem, should be encouraged,  said Dr N Ismail, professor, Badriya Pre University College on the occasion.

Babar, the Mughal emperor,   made a record by constructing libraries,  while his son Humahun built bigger libraries than his father  and spent all his time there and later slipped from the steps of the same library and died.  Akbar was also the library and literature lover. Every scholar gained knowledge from library. Our libraries should invite the people to gain knowledge,  said T Y Mallayya, assistant librarian, Mangalore University.

Prizes were distributed to the winners of various competition conducted by the department of library.

R K Ramegowda, deputy director, city and district central library welcomed the gathering. Chandrakala delivered  key note address.
