Bangalore, Dec 7: The Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled, held ‘The Great Walkathon 2008’ on Saturday December 6 at the Sri Kanteerava Stadium, in the city. One of the aims of the walkathon is to sensitize the public about the plight and hardships of the differently-abled.

This is the fourth year that the trust has conducted this charity walk in aid of visually-impaired, physically-challenged, and economically backward children. The walkathon brought together celebrities, corporates, and the general public along with the differently-abled and created a feeling of solidarity.

This year is also the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, making the commemoration of World Disabled Day all the more relevant. At least 10 percent of the world’s population is estimated to be differently-abled, with a majority of this population living in the developing countries.

Before the walkathon, participants also paid tribute to the brave soldiers, and citizens who laid down their lives in the Mumbai terrorist attacks. A photo banner exhibition was also organized as part of the event

Great effort, striking pictures. However, it would have been nice if the report had mentioned some concrete progress resulting from past walk-a-thons or similar efforts.

Excellent work done to create awareness. People need to realise that disabled people are no less different from  normal people.
