Mangalore, Dec 11: The recent Mumbai terror attack has had a huge impact on foreigners visiting  many historic and tourist spots of India. Apparently Mangalore seems to have had  little impact as the tourist centers of the city continued to fill with foreign tourists emerging out of the cruise ship anchored at the New Mangalore Port on Thursday December  11.

The elegant passenger cruise liner  made a port of call at Mangalore  with about 250 tourists on board  from Europe. They visited the temples in Kudroli, Mangaladevi, Kadri, St Aloysius College chapel etc on Thursday.  The District police department had provided them sufficient armed security in all coaches in which the tourists traveled within  the city.

The tourists expressed their contentment about the security given by the police department. They asserted that  they feel safe to visit India even though the terrorists recently attacked hotels in Mumbai and killed foreigners there.

The tourists would leave for Malaysia, after visiting tourist places in and around the city.

Reading this story brought back memories of another time in Mangalore, when similar cruise ships used to frequent Mangalore. Wilma Rodriques of the then Albion Travels used to graciously invite me to be the 'tour guide' on the bus taking tourists around these beautiful sites in Mangalore. I'd almost forgotten those days until I read this piece. I'd like to specially thank Mrs Rodrigues for having given me the opportunity then. I have no doubt that these ships will continue to anchor in Mangalore for a long time to come.

Very nice pictures indeed. Worth going miles to see. Our Dakshina Kannada has so many historical and cultural spots which every foreigner would love to visit and take their memories back home. The only drawback is that no responsible officials have tried to highlight these in the tourism brouchures abroad. There is a need to showcase our richness abroad and all foreign tourism and travel agencies must be sent useful information on such attractions.

When this happens, there will be more and more people visiting our district especially which will give a lot of employment opportunities. There will be a need for travel agencies, tourist guides, transport, hotels and so many other hospitality related business. The government authorities should undertake this great revenue earning business. If they cannot, they should hand over this project to some private companies and there will be success written all over the venture.

Foreigners should be treated well & they should realise that they are secure in order to boost the tourism in D.K. as the district has beautiful places & nice beaches. If tourism improves there will huge revenue & employment for the locals. Hope present government will improve coastal security to prevent terrorist threats.
