Udupi, Dec 16: The Christian Helpline of the district was inaugurated by Episcopal vicar Fr Baptist Menezes in a function held at SMS Community Hall, Bramavar, near here, on Sunday December 14.

Speaking on the occasion, Fr Menezes said that loving fellow men and helping in their needs in life on earth would bring us eternal rewards.  Christian Helpline, an organization set up for the welfare of the community should grow in strength with active participation of all members, he added.

Kallianpur Milagres College retired professor Richard Rebello, in his presidential address, said that the helpline is a laity organization which should stick to its set objectives to emerge as a reckoning force.  The strength of such an organization in Goa persuaded the state administration to discontinue a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) proposed to be set up in their neighbourhood, said Rebello.

Bramavar St Mary’s Syrian Orthodox Cathedral vicar general Fr Ramban G M Scaria conveyed best wishes to the organization.

Eminent lawyer Shirtady William Pinto, in his keynote address said that although we Christians are minority in the country, how we live in the society is what matters most.

Prof Hilda D Souza said that she is happy to be a Christian because Christianity advocates virtues of love, give, and forgive.

Christian Helpline founder president John L Lewis, vice-presidents Raviprakash Gonsalves and Albert Monteiro, general secretary Glen Monis, joint secretaries Jaison Lewis and Antony Roche, art secretary Cyprian Crasta, treasurer Steven Rodrigues, organizing secretaries Ronald Manohar, Eric Lewis, Christine D’Silva, Santosh Suares, and Paul Crasta, were also present on the occasion.

Christian Helpline founder president John L Lewis welcomed the gathering while Albert Monteiro delivered the introductory address. Glen Monis and Raviprakash Gonsalves proposed the vote of thanks. Alwyn Danti compered the programme.

not contradicting or agreeing in totality, i think its some way of trying to connect to ppl. If someone is in need, a line which is available to them to give some comfort is cool. but where is the helpline number? where do i call if i want help?

Dear Rajesh, it is not shying away from the name Christian. The name Christian is a universal one, belonging to every christian which is treated with respect all over the world, and it should be kept clean without aligning it with any organisation. No one should be allowed to use the name Christian for any type of organisation since any short comings of these organisations will have direct repercussions on the entire christian community. It can be called the "Udupi christian Helpline" not christian helpline as can be seen on the logo and also the use of Holy cross on the logo`s should not be encouraged It will not be long before several organisations will spring up saying christian helplines, some may be genuine and some not. We must take lessons from the several charities and service organisations who misused the Islamic names and the funds of the good muslims into objectionable activities, there by tarnishing the name of the entire muslim community. We must learn from the mistakes of others not from our own.

Why shy away from a CHRISTIAN HELPLINE Mr. Felix ME ? The name is apt and so is the clean purpose to help and support  the community. All the very best to all involved. It is only civilised to be helping each other and a human gesture...

I am extremely happy and thankful for the people behind this Christian Helpline. This is a need of the hour for us minorities who do not know what to do when the actual crises comes in to our life. This helpline will help us to know our actual rights, our legal options and how to live in the society with mounting pressures from today's fast changing life. I wish many of the prominent leaders of Christian community will render their services and expertise to this group so that getting help is just a call away.

It would have been a good example of communal harmony and really christian type of unpublicised help, if an Indian name was given to this helpline instead of calling it Christian helpline.

Pleased to read the article on District Christian Helpline inaugurated by Rev. Dr. Baptist Menezes, Episcopal Vicar. Could some one please enlighten me with the "set objectives" other than "welfare of the community",and the HELPLINE any one should resort to in case of emergency/need? What are the telephone number(s)address, contact person(s)etc. Also, in what matters one can contact them and any criteria to join the "force" and get assistance needs to be disclosed as a basic requirement.Nevertheless, wishing the Christian Helpline the best of luck and God's choicest blessings on those office bearers to succeed in their mission.
