Bengaluru, Dec 24: State minister for mines and geology, Rajashekhar Patil, will be holding meeting with legislators and deputy commissioners of coastal districts of Karnataka on December 28 or 29 in an effort to find a solution to the nagging problem of sand shortage faced by these districts.

MLAs from the three coastal districts had written to the minister seeking time on December 26 to discuss the issue of sand shortage affecting the people of their districts with him, in an effort to find a solution to the problem. Sources said that the minister has promised these legislators to visit Mangaluru on December 28 or 29 as he is preoccupied by programmes fixed earlier on December 26, and hold discussions with the deputy commissioners about the problems in the presence of MLAs.

"All the MLAs of these districts had met after the winter session of the assembly at Belagavi ended and sought time to hold consultation with the minister in an effort to bring to the attention of the government about the gravity of sand problem. The minister has promised to hold meeting on December 28 or 29 at Mangaluru. We will take further decisions based on the outcome of this meeting," chief whip of the opposition in the state assembly, V Sunil Kumar, said.
