We should learn from Christians how to serve humanity: Dalai Lama

Dharamsala, Dec 25 (IANS): Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama on Tuesday said the Buddhists should learn from the Christians how to serve the humanity.

Presiding over the second day of his discourse in Bihar's historical city Bodh Gaya, the Dalai Lama urged followers of all religions to form closer contact and learn from each other's traditions.

"The major world religions -- Christianity, Judaism, Islam, different Hindu and Buddhist traditions, Jainism, Daoism, Confucianism, and so on -- each of these has its own unique knowledge that benefits people," he said.

"Therefore, through an exchange of knowledge, we can learn new things from each other."

Emphasising its vital role in the spiritual and inner development, the elderly Buddhist monk said religion has the potential in bringing together people and that "a meaningful exchange could widen and deepen our own spiritual experience".

"Particularly from Christian brothers and sisters, we as Buddhists could learn how to serve the community and engage in social work. I really feel that we should emulate their exemplary social service."

The Dalai Lama has been living in India in self-imposed exile since 1959 when he fled his homeland after Chinese Communist troops took over Tibet.

The spiritual guru's teachings are free and open to the public. Even board and lodging is free for the participants, says the Dalai Lama's office here.

The teaching sessions are held at the request of followers and devotees, mostly Westerners and Asians. The Dalai Lama teaches in Tibetan and there are simultaneous translations in English, Hindi and Chinese for the participants.

The government-in-exile is based in Dharamsala and has never won formal recognition from any country though contacts are maintained at various levels.

Totally a appeasement statement towards a particular community. The fact of the matter is Dalai Lama faces cold shoulder as India looks to improve China ties and therefore, of that reasons it seems he might looking to take assylum somewhere in western states nearly in future. His statement certainly will trigger controversy among rightwing extremist groups here. Otherwise how come he ignores the facts that USA, Russia and NATO states are responsible for destabilizing the globe.

Christians are the pioneers of education in India. Today's modern India is because of Nuns and Priests who build schools and colleges for the poor and needy, that is the power of education. All the national leaders were educated from the foreign countries not gurushala ! but no one is admiring it or appreciate their contribution to the society only getting tag of conversion !!

    Sundara poojarle...,

Tipu killed Christians out of his impeccable love towards his mother land called Hindustan..., Tipu suspected that Christians are in collusion with British who ruled Hindustan for couple of centuries..., For this factual truth, Tipu's patriotism is worth celebrating..., but sadly jokers lost mental balance to oppose it b'coz of their hatred towards religion to which Tipu belongs....!!!

The irony is that, those who are at the receiving end i.e., Christians are not opposing Tipu jayanthi..., but probably those who hate both Christians & Islam followers are conveniently siding with the other for their political benefits...,

Time is come to save REAL Hinduism from FEKU Hinduism followers who has political bias...!!!

Girish...OK..if christians colluded with British so he killed them. Why he killed hindus? Why he attacked temples? Are you favouring Tipu just because you are in muslim country? Forget about Tipu's deshaprema. He wanted power and nothing else. Read the history and you will find how worst was Tipu. I don't want to talk about religion here. I am least bothered about religion.

Christians didn't have any problem when Tipu's father Hyder Ali was ruling. There was perfect harmony and peace during his rule with Christians. It's only when Tipu started his rule and wanted to make state Muslim, so he started forceful conversion. So Christians didn't have any other option but to seek British help. There is no difference between Tipu and BJP, both have same ideology.

A few Christians might have colluded with British against Tippu. But how logical for him to kill and eliminate all the Christians through genocide, destroy their Churches and confiscate their properties? He is not a freedom fighter. Some political party to appease a particular religion glorify him as a hero and a freedom fighter. For me he was a 18th century Hitler. At the end both met the same fate.

Well said Dalai Lama. But sadly in India, they call Christians as converters. They even did not spare Mother Theresa who worked selflessly for downtrodden and abandoned. In Karnataka, they celebrated Tipu Jayanthi who murdered lot of Christians. Christians are often told to leave India by crooked politicians and their chelas.
