Bengaluru, December 30: Crime rate in Bengaluru is on a decline, when compared to the last two years, shows data from Bengaluru City Police.
Data of 2018 up to November shows 202 murders were registered and 194 cases solved, when compared to 228 murders in 2016 and 234 cases in 2017. Only 98 rape cases were registered and all ended in detention as against the 131 registered in 2017.
This year witnessed 45 instances of dacoity, 76 cases of immoral trafficking, 642 cases of dowry harassment, 2701 cases of cheating and 5023 cases of motor vehicle theft.
Police commissioner T Suneel Kumar who credits spirited young officers for the fall in crime rate, says he holds weekly review meetings with deputy commissioners of eight police divisions in the city.
“Heinous crimes of the previous week, murders, chain-snatching incidents and other cases are discussed here in detail,” he says adding that chain-snatching has been taken very seriously as women share emotional bond with their mangalsutras.
The top cop revealed that an extensive plan was formed to arrest the notorious Irani and other interstate gangs involved in chain snatching. Data shows in 2018 only 289 chain-snatching cases were registered against the 355 in 2017.
Theft of jewellery, cash and other instances of robbery were lower, and the recovery rate in such cases is higher in comparison to the past two years.
In 2018, Rs 98.57 crore worth of jewellery, cash and other things were stolen, and Rs 56.32 crore worth of valuables were recovered till November. Whereas in 2017, Rs 126.37 crore worth of goods and cash were stolen and Rs 58.45 crore worth of valuables were recovered. In 2016, Rs 112.67 crore worth of goods were stolen and Rs 67.09 crore was recovered.
Kumar said that the rowdy elements are beyond reformation and may a time have attacked policemen. “In such cases, I have instructed the police force to deal with rowdies with an iron fist. Officers are advised to use minimum force to shoot in defense and arrest them,” he said.
“For the first time the police are booking drug peddlers under the Goonda Act. There is a strict implementation of pubs, bars and restaurants in the city that play music, obtaining necessary permission from the police department, as per the Supreme Court’s order,” the commissioner said.
