Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Jan 2: Weather in Karnataka appears to have suddenly changed and cold wave has been sweeping north Karnataka districts. Bidar, known for its hot weather, recorded lowest minimum temperature during the last 50 years. Mangaluru too registered minimum temperature of 20 degree Celsius after staying hotter even during nights since several days.

Meteorological sources attribute this to the phenomenon of cold wave experienced in north India blowing towards the south. Bidar experienced minimum temperature of six degree Celsius on New Year day, which is about nine degree lower than normal. The previous lowest temperature recorded here was 6.2 degree on January 9, 1967.

S S Gavaskar of Karnataka State Natural Disaster Management Authority expects this phenomenon to continue in the state for several more days.

With drastic change in temperatures, health of the people is likely to become a casualty. Therefore, the people are advised to properly protect themselves by wearing proper clothing, avoiding going out in cold climate etc.

The temperatures recorded in some towns of the state were 11.8 in Belagavi, 8.5 in Vijayapura, 10.2 in Haveri, 9.8 in Dharwad, 10.7 in Kalaburagi 11.3 in Madikeri, 14 in Bengaluru, and 11.6 in Shivamogga. These places have recorded a marked drop of two to seven degree Celsius in minimum temperature.
