Triple talaq matter of gender equality, Sabarimala is about tradition - PM Modi

New Delhi, Jan 2 (Agencies): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that while triple talaq is a matter of gender equality, entry of in Sabarimala is related to tradition.

In an exclusive interview to ANI, Prime Minister tried to clear the air on BJP's apparent contradiction in its stand on the controversial triple talaq ordinance and the ban on entry of women between the age group of (10-50 years) in the Sabarimala Temple by saying the ordinance against triple talaq was brought keeping in mind gender equality and social justice and it should not be seen as interference in religious issues.

However, on the entry of women of menstrual age in the Sabarimala Temple and protests by Hindu groups, Prime Minister Modi said that the issue relates to tradition and the Supreme Court judgement that saw a dissent by a lady judge should be read carefully.

"Triple talaq ordinance was brought after Supreme Court verdict. We have said in our BJP manifesto that a solution would be found to this issue under the Constitution," Prime Minister Modi said.

"Most Islamic countries have banned Triple Talaq. So it is not a matter of religion or faith. Even in Pakistan, triple talaq is banned. So it is an issue of gender equality, matter of social justice. It is not an issue of faith. So keep the two separate," he said.

Reacting to a question on the BJP's stand on the Sabarimala issue, PM said: "India is of one opinion that everyone should get justice. There are some temples, which have their own traditions, where men can't go. And men don't go... In this, Sabarimala, a woman judge in the Supreme Court has made certain observations. It needs to be read minutely. There is no need to attribute those to any political party. As a woman, she has made some suggestions. There should be a debate on that as well sometimes."

Triple Talaq issue is an issue of around 400 plus women's issues in 125 plus crore popultaion and nobdoy is objecting on the ordinance, but why 3 years life term whereas its only 1 year for hindus and no jail term for abandoning of wife. So now those crooked people who give instant talaq, will not utter talaq talq talq fear of jail term and just abandonend the wife like our PM and enjoy the life and with this ordinance life of wife become like jashoda bane. My yaha tu waha....

    Sriman Modi Ji,

Would you please enlighten us about how Triple talaq is a matter of gender equality?

If your concern is towards gender equality, why have you not brought an ordinance/law that would punish even females who run away from husbands and inform them later by phone or letter? Isn't that also a form of Triple talaq by females? Why a male is always considered a culprit by default and is blamed for all problems in family matters before he is found guilty by proper investigation. I think you have no maturity in family matters. And all of us know why.

The PM is trying to justify the stand taken by RSS. He has not uttered a single word when Amit Shah had openly defied the supreme court judgement on the issue. As a head of government he should have adhered to supremense c0urt judgement. He is unnecessarily talking about triple talaq and interfering in Muslim personal law. Looks like he is frustrated as he cannot showcase any achievements in the last five years.

Ordinance about triple talaq is in fact, Govt interference in religious issues.
Triple talaq misuse must have addressed by Muslim religious leaders not by govt.
And, why there is no gender involved in Sabarimala ???
