Mangalore, Dec 22: Bishop Aloysius Paul D'Souza said on Monday December 22 that  Christmas this year, is being celebrated in the background of attacks on Christians and their places of worship, which has spread fear and anxiety among Christians and others.

“Christmas is the celebration of God’s love, of peace, and harmony, among people of goodwill. There is a hate campaign that is being unleashed, thus polarizing human society for selfish and sinister motives. In such a situation, the message of Christ is loud and clear, and it should come as a soothing balm to the wounded Christian community and as a destroyer of hate and pain in whatever form it makes its appearance”, he added.

The Bishop said that Christmas tells one to not curse the situation one is in, but to become beacons of hope to people around them. Wishing happy Christmas and a peaceful new year to the people he said, “Let this year’s celebration be different in that it should fill us with new hope and that our Saviour should make our life a witness to his everlasting love”.

Christmas is a holy and solemn occasion. Its a prayer time to rejoice the birth of Christ. But today Christmas has moved away from its meaning. Mere enjoyment, shopping and and party-going has overtaken. While the West has changed its slogan to HAPPY HOLIDYS and Santa rather than prayer and worship the commercialism is daunting this occasion. In India also its catching up with commercialization . The Santa mania is picking up. We the Catholics have a great responsbility not to lose sight that this is not a party time but a prayer time to rejoice the birth of Jesus in a true sense. Keep Christmas Commerce free.

When the time came the baby had to be born and there was no place not any decent house not a secure hospital only a place the parents found for the baby to be born was a manger, a cow shed we could say in mangalorean terms. Sure the message is right not to curse the situation, not to blame others for making our life difficult, not to blame others for not giving us the pleasures if we can not afford or if we do not find them but to find a meaning fitting the situation and to identify christ in the situation the way He was, to be a part takers in the life of Jesus and to show the world, neighbours, to the good and not so good people arround that we have a purpose in this life and that is to spread peace, to spread love and to live in a manner that fits the life of Jesus the Christ.
