Mangaluru, Jan 3: In a sad incident, a Gulf returnee committed suicide here on Wednesday January 2, a day after he shared details on Facebook about how he was cheated by three persons in the city.

The deceased has been identified as Austin Noronha (55), a resident of Vamanjoor here.

Sources said that he had been working in Qatar for over 25 years, before returning to his hometown last year.

On Tuesday January 1, he took to Facebook to allege that he had been cheated by three persons who promised to help him buy land and build houses. Austin in his post said that when he returned from Qatar he had over Rs 20 lac in savings, but the three persons together cheated him out of it all, so much so that his family had to even go without food at times. He also shared the names and phone numbers of the people who allegedly cheated him.

Sources said that Austin was allegedly duped by the three people a year ago, and on January 1, he shared his experience publicly again. On January 2, he committed suicide at his residence by hanging. Mangaluru rural police arrived at the spot and registered a case.

Austin was a founding member of Mangalore Freethinkers group.

He leaves behind his wife and two children.

Please think a thousand times before trusting anyone with your life savings, may it be your family member or your best friend. Money is the root cause of all evil. It is safer to be cautious.
So sad to hear the news of this gentleman's suicide. It is a tragic and irreplaceable loss to the family, especially to his 2 innocent children.
I hope the accused are immediately arrested and serve justice to this family.
May his soul rest in peace.

Very sad.May his soul rest in peace.I am sure he was completely desperate by loosing money and was not able to support his family ,so that he felt ashamed and taken this step.Mayy be there was no response from the looters to his publishment,or any other people? He himself kept it to himself.Very often NRIs are falling in crooks hands and loose money. But it is no way to suecide, instead ,go to some legal ways and make them to pay for it.FB.is not a way to get back your money.Heartfelt sympathys to the family.was son too involved in this mystery?so he took extreem step?

Despite media alert from time to time people are falling free to fraudsters. The family should get justice. By committing suicide he has increased the burdens of the family. May almighty God give them wisdom to fight for justice. The named persons to be booked immediately and sent behind bars.

THERE MUST BE A STRONG RULINGS ON PROPERTY BUSINESS AND THESE PROPERTY BUSINESS AGENTS WITHOUT ANY QUALIFICATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE THEY EARN A LOT !
BY HOOK OR BY CROOK THEY WANT THEIR BUSINESS MONEY...BECAUSE OF THESE AGENTS PROPERTY BUSINESS IS AT RISK!!..
GOVERNMENT MUST INTERFERE AND PUT ON HOLD TO MIDDLEMAN/COMMISSION AGENT IN PROPERTY BUSINESS AND GOVERNMENT MUST RESTRICT BUYING AND SELLING OF PROPERTY LEFT N RIGHT...
RESTRICT ONE PERSON CAN BUY ONE OR TWO PROPERTY THEN AUTOMATICALLY PROPERTY RATES WILL COME TO REASONABLE AND MIDDLE CLASS PEOPLE CAN ABLE TO BUY AND AT THE SAME TIME PROPERTY BUSINESS WILL INCREASE, GOVERNMENT CAN SOURCE A INCOME ALSO

NRIs dont trust any one, even if they are your own relatives. People have no morality , greedy of money. Heartless rude people worst than animals. So unless you are here, do not entrust any civil contract to anybody. Bangalore city is known for cheaters and rowdies. Now Mangalore also is in the same line. Choose only reputed and trustworthy builders before you book your apartment. Its a big lesson to all the NRIs. The three men who are responsible for Austin Noronha's suicide, should be arrested and prosecuted immediately.

Even a normal person will become cheater in Mangalore, if the victim is too willing and foolish enough to get cheated.

This should be an eye opener for all catholic NRI's of mangalore who have so far fed brokers their hard earned money.

Advice to all overseas returnees who either quit their jobs or retire from overseas jobs. There are a lot of predators waiting back home, offering you fantastic returns on your money or Microsoft kind of business ventures which will make you rich overnight. Many of these predators happen to be from your friends circles or even relatives. Be careful and remain smart and do not fall for such schemes however tempting they may look. Live in peace with what little you have and saved with your blood and sweat and do not lose everything to these cheats and scamsters.

    Very sad indeed.
One can imagine his pain, agony and frustration....
but ending his own life is not a solution to his ordeal. Instead he has put his family into further distress and torment.
    RIP Austin.

Very sad to know!!! But I wonder how such an educated and gulf experienced person fell into the trap of these crooks.

We should always use our diligence and lot of research while doing any business specially when it comes to land. Before buying any land we should conduct the scrutiny of the relevancy of documents. He could have invested his hard earned money to any small scale industry rather. Now all is over. Feel sad for his family!!

Very sad news. My condolence to the family. All the 3 looters named by the deceased should be arrested and family of the deceased be compensated by selling assets of these 3 Mangalorean Mallyas. There should not be any mercy on these beggers. Let them enjoy their remaining life in jail. I am sure that they have cheated many more people. Thorough investigation should be held on the assets of these three thugs.

    Very sad indeed,

We have to be very cautious before entering any financial deal with third party, reason being some vultures in the form of human face waiting chance to grab from others, they need easy but luxurious life by hook or crook, they not bother for other.
25 years of gulf work means very much, one who spent life in GCC could understated how much struggle late Austin might have under gone.
    RIP peace dear dattu Austin.
