Kasargod: Century-old Uppala railway station on verge of collapse

Daijiworld Media Network – Kasargod (EP)

Kasargod, Jan 7: The neglect of Uppala railway station, one of the century old railway stations in the country, has continued. A committee named ‘Save Uppala Railway Station,’ opposing the apathy towards the railway station has started campaigning for the maintenance. The railway station and the office of station master have become the nest of chaos. The tiled roof of the office and ticket counter are about to fall down anytime.

Uppala is leading in the areas of the district that are being developed. It is necessary to have a railway station that is conducive for comfortable travel of people. It is alleged that concerned people are not looking into it even though local people have repeatedly requested for its upgrade.

A citizen campaign formed last year had submitted through the MP, an appeal to the officials of southern railways for its upgrade and stops for express trains. Protests were also held for the same.

Hundreds of students and employees going to Mangaluru Calicut and Kannur depend on the railway station. Ordinary people use it more often. Providing basic facilities to them are the primary responsibilities of railway department. Only four passenger trains and Malabar Express train stop here at present. The Netravati express train that runs to and from Mumbai does not stop. Local people have demanded that Maveli express to Thiruvananthapuram and Egmore express should stop at Uppala.

The assurance of officials that the railway station will be developed has not become a reality. Distant trains should stop at Uppala. There has been no response to appeals sent by Save ‘Save Uppala Railway Station,’ so far. Railway passengers and the staff on duty are facing hardship without basic facilities.
