Custody death: Book police station head and others, orders Ghaziabad court

Ghaziabad, Jan 8 (IANS): In an alleged custody death case involving a woman last year, a local court on Tuesday ordered the Uttar Pradesh police to book in-charge of a police station and his colleagues.

The case is related to the police station of Tronika City in Ghaziabad where the suspect was taken into custody on May 13, 2018, but was found dead the next day.

The court of Chief Judicial Magistrate in its order said it was "evident" that the suspect, Sarita Tyagi, was tortured in custody. The order states that after taking her into custody at 3:30 pm on May 13, the policemen had tortured her in the lockup and then rushed her to a hospital after she had already died.

Citing the hospital report that said she had been brought dead, the order referred to her postmortem report which said her collar bone and a third rib were found fractured. She was allegedly given methyl alcohol, the report had said.

The order named the then SHO of Tronika City police station, Shyam Veer Singh, Sub Inspector Jitendra Chauhan, Lalit, Rajeswar, Sunny and other policemen of the same police station.
