BANGALORE, Jan 3: The State Government has strictly gone by the principle of seniority in deciding the appointment of the new Director-General and Inspector-General of Police (DG-IGP).

The Government on Friday announced that Director-General of Police (Corps of Detectives) Ajai Kumar Singh would be the new DG-IGP. The present DG-IGP R. Sri Kumar is slated to retire on January 31. Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa told presspersons that Mr. Singh, an IPS officer of the 1974 batch, would be the new DG-IGP and would succeed Mr. Sri Kumar.

Sri Kumar, who belongs to the 1973 batch of the IPS, became DG-IGP after K.R. Srinivasan retired from service.

Yeddyurappa said Minister for Home V.S. Acharya, Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs Suresh Kumar and Chief Secretary Sudhakar Rao on Thursday held a meeting and decided to appoint Singh as the new DG-IGP of the State.

Jija Harisingh, DGP, Fire and Emergency Services, a 1975 batch of the IPS, was one of the contenders to the top police post.

Born on January 6, 1951 at Sirsaganj in Uttar Pradesh, Singh held various posts over three-decades of service. He has been appointed as DGP CoD, Special Units and Economic Offences, Bangalore, on December 3, 2007. He served as DGP Home Guards; Commissioner of Police, Bangalore; Joint Commissioner of Police, Traffic and Security, Bangalore; Commissioner for Traffic and Road Safety. He also served as DIGP Intelligence, DIGP Railways, and Superintendent of Police in Mandya, Shimoga, and Additional SP in Gulbarga.

Singh, known for his investigation skills, led the investigation team into terrorist attack on the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and the terrorist attack in Hubli.
