Udupi: Leopard Gets Entangled in Noose, Dies

Udupi, Jan 5: A leopard got caught in the trap laid by the villagers for pigs and other animals near Nellikatte (Kambla Thota) in Moodubelle. The animal got strangulated as it struggled to release itself from the grips of the noose.



The villagers tried their best to save the leopard but did not succeed. Regional Forest Officer Satish and forest officials Narayan, Farid-Ul-Haq and others came on the scene and made a desparate bid to release the leopard unharmed. Those who tried to save the animal included Rajendra Shetty, Umesh, Lawrence and several others.

    This happens every time and there was news where wild animals were killed this way few months back also. I think there is some trade going on catching animals. Lying of traps should be stopped. Proper equipments, contact details and training should be given to villagers to rescue animals which are trapped.

    There is no indication where the leopard came from. I feel, this is ample indication that the mindless and wanton clearing of forests is the cause of finding wild animals like the leopard in Moodubelle. We find the plague of monkeys in other areas.

    This is tragic and totally unacceptable! We are killing the wildlife in their natural habitat. Reporter says they tried to save this leopard. Great! how about its both legs mercilessly bound that too in a cage! Think before you report. May be we totally lack the thinking power. God save us!
