Bangalore: Mangalore-bound Kingfisher Grounds Passengers for Five Hours

Mangalore-bound Kingfisher Grounds Passengers for Five Hours

The Hindu

Bangalore, Jan 6: Some 50 passengers of Mangalore-bound Kingfisher flight (IT 2443) were stranded at the Bengaluru International Airport (BIA) for nearly five hours on Monday when the regular pilot crossed the flight duty time limit (FDTL) and the airline could not find a replacement immediately.

Passengers grew increasingly agitated as there was no proper information on the reason for delay, even as rumours were rife about the pilot absconding and possibility of the presence of dangerous material on board.

V. Jayaprakash Reddy, one of the passengers, told The Hindu that the flight, scheduled to leave the BIA at 5.30 p.m., was rescheduled. The passengers checked in and boarded the aircraft at around 6 p.m.

However, when the flight did not take off even after an hour, this caused anxiety and temper levels to rise as the flight crew had no proper answers to passengers’ queries. Finally the passengers were deplaned around 7.15 p.m. and brought back to the check-in lounge, said Mr. Reddy. The worries of passengers, who included around 15 women and six children, increased with the delay as many of them needed to travel a further than 70 km to reach their homes after landing at Mangalore airport.

“How can I reach Udupi from Mangalore at midnight? I am travelling alone,” said an irate Shwetha, who said the airline staff did not take her seriously when she explained her difficulty to them.

“Delays are common for various technical reasons. But it is the duty of the airline operators to keep the passengers informed so that there is no panic,” said Mr. Reddy, complaining about the lack of communication on the part of airline.

The airline’s spokesperson said: “The captain who was scheduled to operate the flight from Bangalore came under the purview of the FDTL guideline which specifies the maximum number of hours the crew is allowed to fly an aircraft. This happened due to creeping delays earlier in the day in the air network. The flight therefore had to be rescheduled and another captain was rostered; but unfortunately he was reported sick. This resulted in rostering of another pilot and all these processes delayed the flight.”

It was almost 9.30 p.m. when the passengers were asked to board the aircraft again for the 10 p.m. takeoff.

Airline charge us for everything in addition to Basic Fare- Fuel surcharge, congestion surcharge etc-etc-etc. Why they do not compensate the passengers for this kind of non technical delay? Why they do not provide surface travel security for distant travelers from the airport? This delay is just because of their organizational flaws. Do we have any right to claim the loss and risk the passengers are faceing?

Same incident occurred with me on 15th Dec when the Kingfisher airlines from blore was delayed by over 4 hours. They gave many funny reasons, 1. Pilot is stuck in a Traffic Jam. 2. First officer is absent and not reachable. Finally when we lost patience and started shouting then later they managed to arrange the flight. Things look fishy, since they do not give any clear explaination and thus crate unnecessary apprehension. They ought not to repeat these incidents. I feel their ground staff is highly inefficient and unproffesional. However, the flight attendants and the meal served are too good.

Travelling from Mangalore to Bangalore or vice versa is hell. Travel by road, you feel the real shiradi ghat. I feel the road must have been much better in 1940s when British were still their. Madikeri route, it is better not to mention a word. The road is fit for travelling in small bus since it is very narrow. Coming to train, a single train booked for months. A second train / day train, a big lobby of bus and also govt.bus owners. More over, the present train takes 12 hours. In the same time, a fast train could make up and down jouney. Regarding air jouney, the less we mention the better about it. First of all in our country, hardly 5% can offer such fares. Airport and Mangalore and Bangalore are so far, it is very costly to reach the airport. In a general compartment in train, it costs Rs.222.00 to go to Bangalore and back. Whereas, the cost of taxi at Bangalore and Mangalore would be more than Rs.800.00 to reach the airport. I suggest, the present train to Subramanya be exteneded as push pull train upto Hassan whihc will enable the travellers to catch a bus for reaching Bangalore. Or otherwise, introduce a train upto Hassan.

I cannot agree more with Mr. Sharieff. Air Deccan had an abominable record in this regard. I once had to travel to Calcutta from Bangalore and booked a ticket for the evening flight. This flight was slated to leave at around 5:00 PM. The flight was first delayed by 5 hours and then conveniently cancelled sighting FDTL norms. And as expected no alternative were made for the stranded passengers. It’s heartening to note that Kingfisher Red is carrying on the legacy of its illustrious predecessor. Way to go Kingfisher Red!!

Report to airport two hours before departure. Flight delayed by about five hours. Flying time approx 45 minutes. Check out another one hour. Reach home after another one hour. If it takes about 10 hours by flight from Bangalore to Mangalore, it is much better you hire a taxi and reach there within 7 hours. Cost per person on flight is approx Rs.3,000/- to Mangalore. Cost of hiring taxi from Bangalore to Mangalore is Rs.5,000/- wherein you can take your entire family.
