Shivamogga, Jan 30: Monkey fever, also known as Kyasanur Forest Disease, has created scare in Shivamogga district and some coastal areas of Karnataka of late. A new medicine to treat this condition has now emerged. A youngster has claimed success in finding out a medicine that can stop spread of the disease.   Once the Ayush department approves the medicine, the people would be able to get this medicine.

Nivedan Nempe from Thirthahalli in the district, who had in the past succeeded in finding new products that can be created from areca nut, an important crop of Malnad, has invented this new medicine.

Monkey fever spreads due to tick bites. Nivedan Nempe has created an ointment by using herbs, which effectively can repel ticks.

Nivedan says that his invention was inspired by what the elders in the family used to say by way of traditional advice. In Malnad region, people were being given bitter concoction named as 'Kahi' to stop worms and insects from biting the humans. By using the items which were used for the said medicine and processing them, Nivedan claims to have invented the new medicine.

The symptoms of the disease include a high fever with frontal headaches, followed by hemorrhagic symptoms, such as bleeding from the nasal cavity, throat, and gums, as well as gastrointestinal bleeding. Other symptoms include vomiting, muscle stiffness, tremors, absent reflexes, and mental disturbances.

An affected person may recover in two weeks, but the convalescent period is typically very long, lasting for several months. There will be muscle aches and weakness during this period, and the affected person is unable to engage in physical activities.

Prophylaxis by vaccination, as well as preventive measures like protective clothing, tick control, and mosquito control are advised. The vaccine for KFDV consists of formalin-inactivated KFDV. The vaccine has a 62.4% effectiveness rate for individuals who receive two doses. For individuals who receive an additional dose, the effectiveness increases to 82.9%. Specific treatments are not available.
The disease was first noted at Kyasanur village near Sagar in Shivamogga district of Karnataka. The virus has been detected in monkeys in parts of Bandipur National Park (Chamarajnagar) and parts of the Nilgiris. Human infection occurred in Bandipur through handling of dead monkeys that were infected. A human carrier was also detected in Wayanad (Kerala). The disease has shown its presence in the adjacent states of Karnataka including Kerala, Maharashtra, Goa, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat.

The Flaviviridae are a family of positive, single-stranded, enveloped RNA viruses. People should not underestimate the dangerous health condition, contamination, and other relevant issues.
