Udupi: Foreigner contracts KFD - man from Thirthahalli dies, monkeys carcasses found

Udupi, Feb 3: A woman from France got admitted into Kasturba Medical College Hospital Manipal for treatment of Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD), also known as monkey fever, on Saturday February 2. The woman, who is aged 33, had toured places in Uttara Kannada district like Yana, Gokarn etc since the last some days. As she suffered from unexplained fever, she had got treatment from some local hospitals before getting admitted here for suspected monkey fever.

So far, no citizen from the district has been infected with this disease. Still, dead bodies of one monkey each were found at Manipura and Hallihole villages in the taluk on Saturday. With this, the total number of monkeys found dead in the taluk has crossed a century mark.

Lachcha Poojary (77) from Thotatadakoppa within Singanabidare village in Thirthahalli, Shivamogga district, lost his life due to suspected monkey fever on Friday, taking the toll in that district to two. So far, 152 people were admitted into KMC Hospital with suspected monkey fever, out of which 120 were treated and discharged. 30 people continue to be treated in the hospital. In respect of ten among them, test report lis yet to be received, hospital sources stated.

Lachcha Poojary, who was suffering from various ailments, was being treated for them. During the blood test, he was suspected to be suffering from monkey fever. His blood sample was sent by health department to the laboratory. Exact cause of his death would be revealed once test report is received, sources said.
